Why does the Gen3 hybrid battery fail more than in the Gen2?

When I did my fan 20k miles ago (when the car had 125 k miles on it) it had a fine layer of dust. But I do not have pets, only roll down the windows when sitting in traffic or the battery is low on the HSI, and do not crack them while at work which was a dusty environment in Kansas and the same in California (working in chemical facilities usually puts you in the outskirts of cities or towns where surrounded by areas of farmland or delta breezes). The temperature while it did and does get to over 100 F, this to me is not extreme for the car as certain locales, and to prevent dirt and dust from entering the cabin, I kept the windows closed. Some situations and locales are not as fortunate.

I will be interested to see what the findings are from those in Sri Lanka and if the fans are inspected, at what frequency, and what is found when they do.

My father was bald at 35 (my current age as of Wednesday), so the gene scientists were right in my case. Although my mothers father was a little bit light on top.

yeah, when you really think about it, the saying 'you get your hair from your mothers side' if factually correct, doesn't mean you get it from her father. i don't think.(n)

I do not recall seeing a lot of bald or balding women walking around. But since I might be there one day, I could be Tuning it out:whistle:.

As Will Smith said in Men in Black to Zed and K: "Hey, old guys!"
Get back on topic. No one wants to hear about your follicle situation. :)

But since we're on the subject. I've been as topless as Ren since 1987:LOL:

I don't follow what you are saying here but I think you are trying to make an important point.

Or simply putting my ignorance on display!... Already I've got it wrong in stating that I've seen it said here that the Gen 3 modules have higher series resistance than Gen 2. It's actually LOWER series resistance allowing 30% higher max current rating as per jdenenberg's post #7 here:

    Gen3 HV batteries for Gen2? | PriusChat

This "lower series resistance" Gen 3 vs. Gen 2 is stated many times here through the years but I'm confused as to whether it is achieved by physical differences in module construction or simply via software programming. I've always felt that its inferred the difference is physical. Since I seem to be the only one wondering this, I assume my zero understanding of battery chemistry (and a thick skull) prevent me seeing an obvious answer.

    Thanks for your help, Brad.

A recurring problem on Prius Chat are statements get repeated often enough that they are accepted as true without any data to back them up. There was a time when everyone "knew" that the module count on a Gen II Prius started at the ECU. I needed a flame proof suit when I suggested that actual testing showed the opposite. I have not seen any data that shows Gen III modules have lower IR than Gen II. I have seen data that shows USED Gen III modules are worse off then Gen II.

I agree that the Gen III cars push the batteries harder. It has not been shown that this is because the Gen III batteries have lower series resistance.

PC member GrumpyCabbie has been talking about Gen III batery failures for years.

Just my seat-of-pants impression from listening here: 4th gen batteries are being pushed harder than 3rd gen: cold cars starting and going without engine start-up, if the ambient temp is highish.

    Mendel,

But most (all except type 2) Gen4s have Lithium batteries, so new rules can be invoked.

In the US and Japan (for equivalent trims, except for e-Four-equipped cars), anyway.

Europe only gets NiMH, I believe Canada only gets Li-ion on the top trim...

Canada has 3 levels; the base level only get's NiMH. Also, outside of a few major cities, dealerships only get the base level. Hey, they al

Yeah, I'm not sure how to respond to @jdenenberg regarding chemistry and how hard the battery gets used. Obviously there are still NiMH levels, ie: a chain is only as strong as it's "weakest" link. And is the Li-ion battery a game changer?

I get this sense that Toyota feels an obligation to constantly up the mpg, with each generation. Maybe they've exhausted the conventional means, are resorting to greater exploitation of the battery, to keep the game going?

Exactly! Sir Lanka is hot. Early battery failures will be found under extreme conditions.

    Bisco,

All you post are repeated rumors and innuendo. You never do any first hand testing for yourself.

Want more do you want? That's the second battery rebuilder to chime in and say "Gen 3 batteries suck".

The cab drivers have been reporting this for years!

A new member from a hot climate asks a valid question and he gets ridiculed. PC members have been banned for far less than how the OP has been treated.

I am on the opposite side of the argument but share your level of frustration.
