Hey All! I'm new here and new to the Prius C as well. I Just purchased a Silver Prius C 2. While I've no desire to tow a trailer I would like to carry bikes or a luggage basket. To that end I need a reciever trailer hitch. Toyota says DO NOT TOW with the Prius C....... Two questions...... 1. If I Put a hitch on, am I now on the "no warranty" list at my Toyota dealer? 2. The hitch listings stop at 2015. Is there any reason the 2015 hitch will not fit a 2016? For example....... The Draw Tite hitch 24889 Thanks for your feedback and I look forward to many years of chatting! Dave
In the US, the vendor has to prove your part is to blame. They cannot just decide all hitches mean no warranty, but if you bend the car they can point to the hitch. There is no major difference in c model yeats.
Thanks! So I'd be safe ordering the 2015 Draw Tite hitch then? I can remove it before service appointments if that keeps Toyota happier........ Dave
Thanks for the feedback. I ordered the Draw Tite hitch for my 2016, only I ordered it as a 2015 to calm etrailers fitment double check feature. I also ordered the light interface for I have a basket that I installed lights on as an added safety feature. Sometimes what I Carry obscures one or both tail lights. Dave
I officially l asked my dealer about it. I was told installing a trailer hitch does not violate the manufacture warrantee or my leaseas long no wiring is tapped into, I don't tow a car and the hitch is bolted on. Still waiting for confirmation that a 2015 hitch will fit my 2016 car.
Just chiming in, got the Curt hitch and it is only 6 bolts, no drilling. Haven't installed yet but just letting people know...
Mine required 8 bolts. Most of the time spent was being careful. I also ordered and installed the plug and play trailer wiring from Curt. It can be taken out easily. No cutting. Some people power it from the accessory adapter at the passenger seat. I ran dual No. 12 stranded wires from the battery, fully fused and picked up the ground at the rear fender. To penetrate the firewall, I pierced the grommet above the accelerator pedal.
For the 2016 prius C, I got the Eco hitch 2", and it has 4 bolts. The only issue I ran into was the left side plastic cover. It isn't there on the younger models and I had a hard time removing it (I I ended up cutting the plastic to fit). Without that snag it would not take much time at all to install. I took my car to the dealership and had them finish tightening the bolts (I don't have that tool). I got an oil change too, so all went really well.
I just installed the 4 bolt draw tite.. it was much easier to install than the 6 bolt version i installed on my previous c. I can't recall if it was curt or reese.. but it was 6 bolts and took longer.. it's not fun installing the upper bolts.. and with 2 less bolts to do, it made this install much easier. I highly recommend avoiding the 6 bolt. I tapped the yellow and green trailer brake/turn light lines into the brake light circuit and didn't bother with the turn circuit.. and brown to tail of course.. The $40 T kit doesn't seem worth it.. I've seen 3 of them fail inside the main box.
