Hi am experiencing engine shaking and vibrating! This mainly happens on cold starts! This also is common when the car drops down to two bars then the ice kicks in! Any ideas? Thanks
Original owner? Ever change the PCV valve? Clean the intake manifold? Does the engine throw any codes? Loss in mpg? How long has the oil consumption been at that rate? Egr been checked?
Many possible causes. One is something called an EGR valve, which is currently covered under an unlimited mileage warranty! NEW!!! Service Bulletin for Engine Knocking at Startup T-SB 0012-10 | PriusChat However, another possibility is, if you're losing oil because of failing piston rings, it will cause the EGR valve to become clogged. You or a mechanic can clean this out and bring some life into the car. Some engines with bad rings last a very long time, but with Prius (and probably many others) you need to clean out the clogging which this condition can cause. Or it could be something else...
Hi guys thats for the advice! I think i will start by cleaning the egr valve out and see what differance it makes!
Cleaning out the EGR valve is somewhat involved, but there's a NutzAboutBolts video which shows how to clean the EGR pipe, and that's very easy. This is the pipe between the EGR valve and the intake manifold. If this pipe is showing signs of being blocked, then maybe you should consider cleaning the EGR. Another poster took his car to an independent mechanic who actuated the EGR valve a few times using his diagnostic scanner tool, and this apparently un-stuck his EGR and solved his problems.
Is it every cold start? or a cold start AFTER you had previously driven the car a very short distance, say backing it out of the garage and shutting it off?
Fix head gasket/ coolant pressure issue in one second: take off the little rubber ring on overflow reservoir cap. The pressure in coolant system will be stable atmospheric. No more 15psi pushing coolant through gaskets etc.
Nature of "cold start" issue is accumulating coolant inside cylinder. Too much pressure. It happens 75% of stars, due to random position of the bad cylinder piston
