On my ride into work, everyone's moving fast. Most at 80 MPH. Today I looked and I was doing 90 MPH. Barley had the gas pedal pushed down, and the car was doing it effortlessly. Car was quiet, couldn't here any engine noise. I guess the gearing has the ICE at low RPM even at 90 How fast will this car go?
And that's a software-enforced limit. I think 112 is accurate at least for Gen2; I don't recall if anyone verified Gen3/4.

I accidentally went 94 MPH. I was just enjoying the scenery, while driving down a long steady hill of about 5 or 6 miles... didn't even realize I was going that fast. The car was hugging the road very well. But I can't honestly say that I was comfortable being at that speed. Add it seemed to be a little difficult to slow down. I was afraid I was going to burn up the brakes. Didn't think to go to the "B" mode. I don't ever want to drive that fast again. Luckily, there was no traffic.
Car and Driver listed the top speed at 115mph. I like their test figures because they run in both directions to cancel any wind or grade differences. Shown in April and March 2016 reviews.
I know they are just testing the car. But in real life, I hope that nobody wants to test the limits, and try and do 115 miles an hour in a Prius?! If so, they must have a death wish. (some of the crazy Prius drivers around here, can't even turn on their headlights when it's dark!)
I've gone 100mph in the gen 4 and 105 in the gen 2. The gen 4 felt really stable. Not so much my gen 2 lol. My steering wheel vibrates at 80mph and it's loud.
I wish - if I were to "get caught" beyond 93 MPH (150km/hr) on a deserted, perfect, 2 lane wide road in Outback Australia, 200km from the nearest town, I'd have a $1,137 fine, 8 licence demerit points and 6 months licence suspension. Our speed limits are the same as 60 years ago (though in many areas lower) though roads have improved dramatically, cars are infinitely (well, almost) safer, but our Government rakes in MANY million $$$ per year from fines. No, I don't disagree with speed limits - the police just monitor them where it's easy for them to do so, often in very safe locations, not in places (like school zones, long on-ramps etc) where excessive speed is unsafe.
Yes, mostly. We never see Police Cars on the road, sometimes a Van tucked behind a tree etc with a camera on-board, I think they're manned. But mostly they put up fixed cameras - which everyone knows where it is. But the effect is that nicely flowing traffic driving at the legal speed limit slows near the cameras, bunches up and takes at least 5 km to settle down again. Meantime, thousands of lane-changes occur trying to sort it out - 'twould be far safer to not have the cameras in most places.
Gen 2:108mph Gen 3:116mph But in my opinion neither sustains it's governed speed. Each can maintain 4mph under their max all day long though.

It's been though a lot. One medium accident and 242,000 miles. I expect rattles and creaking and vibrating. It isn't a big deal.

The engine has no fixed RPM at speed, the computer is free to rev to enough power to get to a speed, or enough torque to maintain a speed. Motor/Generator2 has a fixed RPM per MPH, and on the Prius I know of, that is what red lines at max speed, not the engine. (the v has a different final drive ratio, so has a top speed of 103 MPH even though it has the same power from both the engine and the M/Gs. You just hit M/G2's redline earlier) Different road slopes, different amounts of headwind/tailwind, and I suspect different air density, all effect engine RPM at a given speed. (RPMs raise in rain, which can be thought of as a different density of air. To be fair the car is wasting HP lifting road spray into the air)
That's my picture from my 2015! (Which, thank you Vman, for my privacy.) I actually got up to 117 mph once down a slight hill here in West Virginia. Didn't stay there long, before dropping back down to 116 mph. Gen.1 Prius is 102mph, Gen.2 is 109 downhill 108 on flat ground. & Gen.III is 117 downhill and 116 flat out. Haven't went over 90 in my new Gen.4 though. Felt great, however.
