News on battery rubber vent smell

    Yes I kept the old tubes which still stink after months.
    Should I open a new topic regarding other issues I described in the past above?

    What are the dimensions needed for the silicone tubing? I see a ruler in the photo, but am not sure if it' a metric or standard measurement.

    Safest bet would be to take measurements when you've got it open, then hie to the home improvement store.

    Get 3 foot of silicone tubing, 14mm outer, 10mm inner diameter. The nearest inch diameters will be OK, too. To cut the holes, I used a 5mm punch. Again, the nearest imperial is OK, too as the material is very flexible. The stubs on the battery have a outer diameter of 7mm. The holes are 39,2mm apart. If you twist (by hand) the punch while pushing it into the tubing, you can cut just through the first wall of the pipe. If you push too hard or twist too much, you punch through the entire pipe. Try it 2-3 times on a small piece of pipe before doing the main ones. As said above. Have punch, knife and silicone hose ready and then just copy the position from the removed pipe. Wear gloves touching the OEM pipes. They stink like hell and the smell sticks to the skin giving you that lovely Prius odor for hours even after washing your hand several times. The OEM pipes contain a plastic cap at one end. Pull it out and insert it into the cut to length silicone tube. Once everything is punched, cut and inserted, just put the pipes back onto the snubs of the cell, connect them to the white plastic barbs on the right and reassemble the battery and interior. As you are a country governed by safety: read the manual on how to remove the orange HV safety plug. Also remember to first disconnect 12V battery ground, then disconnect the orange HV plug. Then after finishing the assembly work, reconnect the HV plug followed by 12V ground at the battery. If you reverse the order, the car won't go to ready.

    @ive I'm not understanding a couple of you're numbers. If the purchased tubes have ID 10mm, and the stubs on battery have OD 7mm, aren't the tubes going to be too loose? Typo?

    If you look at the pictures one page back in my post you can see that the pipe (milky white colored) sits horizontally on the vertical stubs. They point up. The stubs get pushed into the holes you punch into the side of the 10m ID 14mm OD tubing.

    Realize this is kind of an old thread, but interested in this as well, as i think i have an 08 Prius with this problem. Does anyone have a part number for those vent tubes. I'm not adverse to putting in the effort to get in there and replace them, but want to find out where i find them before i start disassembling too much.

    I see the Silicone tube retrofit in other threads, but that seems like a warranty voiding solution too me, (yeah i got suckered into the extra warranty by the dealer when i bought this used)

    I think you're in warranty breaking territory the moment you open it up. I would go the aftermarket vinyl tube route, cheaper, and more effective.

    Jumping off of what @OregonDave asked. Did anyone happen to know the part number on these? I would love to DIY but I don't have a place or tools to do it, plus the most I've really done is replace an alternator, a horn, and change oil in previous cars.

    I will check, but I wanted a fall-back just in case he can't do it with the silicone. He is working out of a regular garage but tends to go above and beyond for me, insofar as honest work.

    I like dogs and cows and stuff but I don't like my car to smell like dogs and cows and stuff.

    Maybe there's no part number for the vent tubes, at least not a regular one: they're internal in the battery, which has a part number.

    As I understand it, a Toyota New battery does not come with the vent tubes, they are removed from the old battery and re-installed on the new battery. So, even getting a new battery will not fix this problem. Using silicone tubing might be the only way to go.
