Replace Under Engine Splash Guard

    Something like this can be a money pit, having it done by professionals. If there's any way you can see doing it yourself, or getting a friend to look at it, much easier on the $'s, it'll be a learning experience, and it'll likely stay fixed.

    There's likely broken and/or missing fasteners. It's best to purchase replacement from dealership. They will be the right ones, more expensive, but will fit and last better. Also, if the holes they're going into are torn or damaged, that needs to be addressed. If it's hopeless, the cheap solution is to just remove the the panel. :)

    It'd be best to have the front end raised, say min. 6". Either floor jack and safety stands, or ramps. Do work safe.

    BTW, the Prius transaxle will 90% drain in one go, hopefully that's what the shop has in mind. It's very straight forward. And do not get talked into alternative fluids (if they raise the subject): only use Toyota ATF WS. If they need you to supply it, I believe 4 quarts is sufficient. It can be purchased from any dealership parts department. Correct level is determined by pouring the fresh fluid in until it starts coming back out.

    Thank you! Yes, the holes appear to be torn/damaged. I think someone created new holes, but I haven't looked. I'm not quite as confident as you experienced types are with poking around under the car! o_O

    Hoping the fluid flush will be straightforward... I definitely will use the Toyota fluid!

    I've ordered the splash guard for my Gen II Prius from PartsGeek.com for about $25, $35 with shipping. Other sites were $70 and more. The Toyo dealer was $75 for the part.

    Looks like this lower priced after market shield is one piece and has oil filter hole and hole to access transmission plugs.

    On some cars, these splash guards are really complicated -- they go up inside the bumpers and wheel wells, and they all interconnect... but this isn't the case with Prius. There are just two basically flat pieces of plastic which are held on with a few 10mm bolts and a bunch of plastic rivets. It's very easy to do yourself.
