Just found my car is in the recall list. No remedy yet. If the timing works out I'll combine the visit with a service of some sort, 2 birds with less stones kind of thing.

    Fone ?

The airbag issue is different from the other making headlines.

"The involved vehicles are equipped with curtain shield air bags (CSA) in the driver and passenger side roof rails that have air bag inflators composed of two chambers welded together. Some inflators could have a small crack in the weld area joining the chambers, which could grow over time, and lead to the separation of the inflator chambers. This has been observed when the vehicle is parked and unoccupied for a period of time. If an inflator separates, the CSA could partially inflate, and, in limited circumstances, one or both sections of the inflator could enter the interior of the vehicle. If an occupant is present in the vehicle, there is an increased risk of injury."

The car doesn't have to be moving to fail and cause injury.

My best guess on the part(s) involved.

62170A, AIR BAG ASSY, CURTAIN SHIELD, RH.
62180A, AIR BAG ASSY, CURTAIN SHIELD, LH.

nothing, compared to the 300,000 15 year old honda's, with corroded takata airbags that have a 50% chance of killing you if you get in an accident.

I actually give kudos to an automaker that recognizes a problem and proactively invests into the quality and safety of their already sold vehicles. Good for Toyota.

That being said, I'd be curious as to what their "solution" will be?
If it's a weld? That doesn't sound easily or uniformly fixable. Wouldn't you be counting on the welding skills of any technician? Or is it the replacement of an entire unit?

This sounds like it would not be an easy or inexpensive fix.

I'm sure they would be replacing the welded component. There's no way they would be welding.

I agree. Still sounds like an expensive and complicated repair.
Toyota isn't going to get away with Zip Ties or a software update here.

nope. it'll be just like takata, remove the whole thing and start over. i think my drivers airbag was about 2 hours.

I think this has been covered in the other thread(s) about this, but just so it's here too:

The recall is 16V-487 in NHTSA's files, and this (interim) notice is G0U in Toyota's. When they are ready with the parts for the repair, notice G1U should go out.

The recall also applies to vehicles that don't exist. "Toyota has decided that a defect exists in certain 2010-2012 Model Year Prius and 2010 and 2012 Model Year Prius Plug-In Vehicles." Were the 2010 mules sold?

It's not clear to me what you intended to include as a "mule", but maybe that includes the 150 or so that were distributed to governments and businesses in the US that year (on top of the other 450 worldwide)? At least one such recipient said at the time that they'd have their vehicles for 18 months, so who knows what happened to them since. At the very least, they would've been registered, and Toyota probably has to account for all of them in the recall process, even if they aren't on the roads any more.

I did see at least one of those 2010s though, I recall - I think I either saw one of them twice, or I saw two different ones from the same owner (they had three altogether).

    Ha anyone done this recall?
I got a second letter from Toyota saying I need to take my car to the dealership for this recall, I guess they got the parts to do it.

Gee, what can happen when you put a powerful explosive in the cabin of a car, and expect it to stay there stable for 10+ years. Nothing bad, right? ;)
