Cargo capacity all seats down 2017 Prius vs 2017 Prius v

Here are some numbers below.

Here's the way I look at it, but some may take issue:
There is a big problem with Cargo Space specs in America, as it is hard to get a good comparative quotes between vehicles, because U.S. auto makers are allowed to be creative with space figures. This spec issue especially impacts Liftbacks (cars/trucks without a trunk).

I have not focused much on v but my feeling is quite a lot more rear hatch space. Probably you should discount the Gen4's 27.4-ft3 and think it's really 17.7-ft3 for Gen4 vs. 34.3 for v (which may be closer to the truth)...and then a little more in the rear seat area for v. And the Gen4 case (17.7ft3) is without rear tire, subtract 2-ft3 for Level 3 with spare.

Best approach is to compare the EPA total volume for both cars. Assume same front space say 40-ft3 and the balance is rear space differential.

Prius v
Luggage capacity behind the rear seats is a generous 34.3 cubic feet. Total cargo capacity is also excellent. With 67.3 cubic feet available with the rear seats down, the Prius v rivals most small crossover SUVs.

 

Not true, I don't think.
Go to Toyota.com and get the total specs:

Gen4 (no spare) = 93.1 + 27.4 = 120.5 ft3 total (subtract about 2 or 3 -ft3 for Gen4 with spare).

Prius v 2017 = 97.2 + 34.3 = 131.5 ft3 total (this is with spare and extra under-floor space is not counted)

Question- Does v have underfloor space like a Gen3? If so, that is additional to above.
Weakness of Gen4 (2017) is less cargo space vs. Gen3 due to slim down sedan-look rear, so v has gotta be "huge" as we say now, and you get a spare tire+ semi-huge cargo space + under floor (if any) in the v.

 

I dont know were they get those number but in real world dont even compare the v have way much more cargo space

 

I have a 2017 Prius & my son has a 2015 Prius v. Is that close enough for comparison?
When is the Prius v (lowercase v for the Prius v wagon as only 2010 Prius used uppercase roman numerals for model designation) due for the TNGA redesign?

What trim lines are you considering? My 2017 Prius Two has a little less cargo capacity than the ones without the spare tire.

 

Do we need to move this thread over to Gen4 or Prius v?

 

FWIW we recently packed our 2016 Prius v Three for our annual trip south for the winter. Here are a few photos taken before and after we arrived. I folded the back seats down and removed the head rests prior to loading up. We put two large plastic storage bins, three smaller plastic storage bins, two soft side roll on suit cases, a large soft side roll on duffle bag, a soft side overnight bag, a hard case cosmetics bag, two foam coolers, our pillows, assorted folded coats/jackets (for my wife) and a whole bunch of various odds and ends for our stay. I kept the high stuff behind the drivers side seat for visibility out the back window which was very good by the way. It was a lot of stuff. She cut down her stuff a bit but all in all it came very close to what we carried in our old Dodge minivan. We were quite amazed and happy about that.

The v has a bit of underfloor storage, but more relevant is that it's taller and the rear end is more perpendicular, so larger objects will go in there with the hatch closed. The downsides to the v are it's heavier, so not as nippy and not as economical as the Gen 4.

 

This kind of comparison is where the problem begin you can't compare them they are completely different car for completely different need. would you compare a corvette to a prius? Compare a mazda 5 to a prius v but NOT to regular prius! I think Toyota did a very bad job in promoting and this forum dont help either. they badly classify it in the wrong category. v is not a small car it is bigger than a wagon and more close to a SUV or minivan, crossover. Yes the v is more heavy and less economic than a compact car but way more economic than a SUV and same size please look at this side by side comparisons Masda 5 vs Prius v

 

I think it's very relevant. I seriously compared the 2 - there were advantages of the v (which here is a 7 seater) over the Gen 4, and advantages the other way round.

I then had to make MY CHOICE as to which suited me best. I went with the Gen 4. But at this stage, I've not had many passengers, nor tried a bigger trip - in which case I hope I don't regret not getting a "v".

 

My 2012 Prius v is no larger than my first station wagon, a 1963 Ford Falcon.

So I have no trouble claiming it is a station wagon.

 

Mine was a FORD Fairmont, but I'd have to find my Kodachrome slides and convert them.

 

Toyota have a wagon hybrid only available in Europe, IMO wagon have the length but are lower than bthe v,lowercase v again it is not an uppercase v for the Prius v wagon.

So the v is taller than my first two wagons, and indeed all my wagons except the last, a 2001 Subaru Forester: Height 1,650 mm (65.0 in)
