I am taking delivery of a 2017 Prius V Luxury version (IV) I am getting winter tires on steel rims (Michelin X-ICE 3 205/60 R16) and the sales person tells me I do not have to have Tire pressure monitors for the winter tires. I can stand the light coming on easier than the cost of 4 TPMS units with programming required twice a year (according to the dealer) and the cost at the end of winter when they put the summer tires on. Is there any problem other than the light being on with no pressure monitors installed on the winter tires? Thanks, Norma
No problems. When you put your regular tires back on, the light will go off, the system finds the sensors again. Regarding the regulations, I think the dealership's correct in saying TPMS is not mandatory in Canada. I think: this page's a bit vague: the first question's answer seems to say TPMS is not mandatory. Then the second question, more specifically about snow tire swaps: mentions that it's a provincial decision. As long as they're willing to do the install without TPMS, I would go that route. Much easier for DIY tire swaps, or even if you're getting pros to do it: no need for reinitializing equipment and know how. Ask TC Motor Vehicle Safety - Transport Canada
That would be a correct Canadian answer, but an illegal U.S. answer. That is still fine for travel to the U.S., just don't transfer your vehicle registration to here. DIY installation without TPMS is still legal here, but shops cannot do it.
That is the least of our worries. I'll be in B.C. late this month, and again next month. Ski trips planned before last week, not real estate scouting runs. Really.
