Are you sure that 28.3" depth number is right? I can't imagine that my Gen 2 is 6 full inches deeper than the Gen 4.

So I just got back from my local Toyota dealership and asked for a test drive. Very smooth, and quieter than my Gen3. The hatch space is considerably smaller. I have to take audio gear to a meeting every other month. I figure I'll just fold the seats. Problem solved. The space is adequate for a Costco shopping trip. I will fold the seats when I take the dog anywhere.
Interesting that when he asked if I was shopping around for price, he said no one was discounting the prime, you pay MSRP only. He did not mention the $500 Toyota rebate at all. Since I knew I would not be buying there, I did not mention the deal I got from Dianne. When I returned from the test drive, he came back to tell me that the car I just drove was sold and he would have to cut my time in it short.
The traction battery was discharged and I could not try out the EV mode, but the hybrid mode was very nice. It did not feel slow, or even heavy. I would say it felt 'solid' rather than heavy.
Tuesday can't get here soon enough.

This is about as detailed as I can make it without making a 3d model. Lol. If I missed a measurement just let me know. Hope this helps.

Compared to my 2004, most of these are the same or close to the same. The depth is smaller by about 2 1/4" but the wings are deeper by 2-3". The big one is the vertical height at the back seats - it's 6 1/2" less. That's probably a combination of a lower roof line and a much higher floor due to the battery.

I also forgot to mention the door has some room to use but I would only use it for soft stuff. I can't really measure that but I estimated up to 4" more depth including this door space.

The back hatch kind of protrudes further out over the bumper. Giving more room inside.

But I don't think you can close the hatch with stuff there. You'd have to insert it into the lower window cubby after it was closed.

Are there any D-ring tie downs anywhere? Can't see what's inside those recesses in the pictures.

Yah. Pillows only kind of thing.

There are two little folding hooks. That's it. I guess they felt it was small enough it didn't need tie-downs.

With spare tire (and my measurements are also with a spare tire)

That's what I measured on that side of the car. The numbers above for the Prime are almost the same at 30" at the side and 33" down the centre.

Using the measurements above, the largest box that can fit with the hatch closed is 30" x 37.5" x 10" = 11250 cui or 6.5 cu. ft (184.3 litres)

I'd have gladly opted for a higher roof line - even if it'd kiss off a mile or 2 mpg's ... but that's just a desire to be able to hold more stuff. Good thing we got our 10yr old SUV hybrid still ... for those trips where 'she-who-must-be-obeyed' needs to load us down like we're hitting the beach at Guadalcana.

    Thanks very much !

Well I must say Toyota did their very best to reduce cargo space wherever they could and it's definitely more than they claimed !
Just have to get used to it I guess .

Just measured the 2003 Chevy Cavalier 2Dr Coupe. Took measurements 4" above trunk floor and approximated a hatchback configuration. Gross +/- <2" all round vs. the Prime. Plus in height and length for the Cav. Minus in some widths. Given the minimal trim and body structure and lack of sound proofing in the trunk area, I call this a wash. This platform in a hatchback could have made a inexpensive G2 era hybrid or G1 Volt. Already had the Ecotec engine.

Holes just have carpet, but the left one has the tire repair kit hidden away below.
