Hi everybody, Unfortunately somebody drove into my car in a car park and dislodged the right-hand side of the rear bumper. This is a body-coloured part to the right of the black centre section. The dealer wants to charge me one hour's labour to take the bumper off and see if the part can be clipped back in again. I thought if there were any workshop diagrams out there I would give it a go myself. Has anybody seen any documentation about the rear bumper on the net? Thanks Paul.
Hey Paul I am not an expert but I think posting pictures would help you in your quest. Good luck. Posted via the PriusChat mobile app.
The Curt Hitch for the 2016 installation guide has some drawings and photos -- they might even have a video by now -- showing bumper removal that might be of some help. Edit: Here is a link Hitch Lookup for 2016 Toyota Prius
Thanks for the advice, everybody. Yes it is a hit and run and would be covered but unfortunately there are complications. My Prius is parked in a numbered bay in a private car park, on the end of a row. My next door neighbour, who is not a great driver, crashed into it on her way out. Hasn't owned up, I'm afraid. Normally I would get the damage fixed straight away, especially as the rest of the car is still mint, but if she has crashed into it already after only a few months, I'm pretty sure she will do it again. So no plans to repair it properly for now. The towing hook instructions were good, ATHiker, all looks quite simple under there so I might have a pop at taking it apart. Usually though I find these things just pop straight back in if there's no breakage, and since it won't do that I guess a clip has broken. I've attached a picture of the damage anyway. Cheers Paul.
it is very easy to take off the bumper cover. It is something like 12 plastic push pins under the car, one little plastic push pin in each wheel well, and there are four screws when you lift the trunk hatch (two are black plastic screws you immediately see, and the other two are behind the black plastic panels that are against the tail lights which pry right off). After that, the side walls of the bumper cover pull straight out and the entire cover with lower parts of the tail lights come off. To prevent scratching you put masking tape along the seams of the cover The part you have taped on might be messed up a little. It plugs into the main bumper cover and then there are 2 plastic "wedge" clips that hold it on. Then there is also a screw that attaches is to the black plastic part of the bumper cover. If it is hanging like that, chances are there is something wrong with the "wedge" connectors. Nevertheless the scariest part of the whole procedure is pulling the side walls out- but the whole process takes less than 5 minutes if you know what you are doing.
2016 Toyota Prius Manuals look at the TPA Rear pdf After everything is disconnected the parts circled in red are tabs that are sandwiched between two clips. you pull this straight out to disengage. The covers all come off the toyotas the same way- you could probably find youtube video of similar. Only other thing is there are two clips by the latch that hold the bumper cover against the back of the car. You just pull the cover straight back away from the car once the sides are disengaged to take it all off.
