My experience with Gen 2 is that if the car cannot detect the key inside any more, it will show NO KEY sign, but will still run until turned off. After that you cannot start it. If you think about it, it makes sense. Say, you are on a freeway driving 65 mph, and throw your key out of the window... In my case we have 1 car between two of us, but two keys. Sometimes I drop my wife at her work, and immediately after she steps out Prius shows No Key, but keeps running. Her key was detected first, in which case after some 20 sec it detects my key and the sign disappears.

One time we had a weird experience in the mountains. We drove to the very top, stopped to take a few pictures and turn off the car. After that the car just wouldn't start! First I panicked thinking Prius kaput, but after several moments realized we were right next to bunch of big retranslation antennas. Signal from them was so strong it just jammed keyless feature. Had to use it as a regular key to start the car.

I did not read anything of this about Gen 4, although read through the whole 800 pages, but I would be surprised if it behaves differently from Gen 2.

I have finally... finally.... gotten into the good habit of always pressing the Power button OFF, even if I just jump out for a few seconds to grab something out of the trunk, close the gate, mail a letter, etc.

NO POWER should solve all potential runaway problems. (Hopedully.)

I'm in the dealership now for my 15K service (tire rotation basically) and they said that they were going to order the part.

This is my 3rd prius, so I know how to turn it off, but I agree with the recall, saftey first.

I asked if I could wait until the 20K service to do the repair, because I prefer to minimize my trips to the dealer, and he said sure, the part may not even come in by then.... We'll see.

This is in Wilmington, NC if anyone is curious.

BTW: I am guilty of putting the car into park, getting out to get my mail, then getting back in the car, sometimes with my daughter in the back seat. I do it so that I can preserve the MPG readout for the extra 200 yards or so from my mailbox to my house. I guess I need to cut that out...

Yeah there's lots of things we do for reasons that don't stand up under scrutiny. Good to see it, move on. (y)

Reading the blurb from the safety notice above, I think you should be alright with the car in Park. It's when the parking brake is used without setting Park that is at risk. Surely it's the parking brake that is the faulty component.

Well, parking brake vs car-in-drive is a tenuous situation, with the best of parking brake conditions. And the parking brake (by design) can be sort-of half applied, depends.

There seems to be a propensity of Prius owners to leave the car "on", for various reasons. My take, you're stopped, not going anywhere: push the power button off. The car is shut down, and in Park. Then apply the parking brake, even on level ground.

Agreed, but sfu23phd had simply stepped out to collect his mail before driving up to the house. Leaving it running in Park for that brief interval should not present a problem, as long as he checks it is definitely in P!

For me it would create a massive problem with my Fuelly icon. It's mediocre as it is.

Also (and I am starting to rant, I know, will shut it down): people who routinely walk away from their running vehicle run up everybody's insurance rates. All sorts of bad things can and do happen. Their kid gets behind the wheel, or they neglect to also put it in park, or an opportunist hops in and takes off in the car.

Google "is it illegal to leave a running car unattended".

Ok, ok, I'll stop. Need meds.

This is illegal? To protect vehicle owners.

    Eating McDonald's should be illegal

The heck with the mpg numbers… I turn the power off every time, before I step out of that car. (And yes, I do enjoy the occasional Oreo McFlurry at McDonald's. But their hamburgers stink.)
