Gen2 Instrument Cluster "secret warranty" (Consumer Reports)

It gets worse, and sometimes corrupts the CAN data enough so the car won't turn off sometimes. The guy I bought my Prius from said the car was ready for about a week before he finally got it to turn off. Even when it seems to be working correctly it can cause network issues. I bought an used 2007 Prius with 120K miles on the odo. It has another month or so left to cross the 9-year mark. The car doesn't exhibit the symptoms, I've registered on the Toyota Owner's site and checked the car's service history and it doesn't have any mention of replacing the instrument cluster. So, I am planning to take it to the dealer and report that the instrument cluster went blank a couple of times and ask for it to be replaced under this warranty.

My questions - Is there way the dealer can test that the problem actually occurred? Does it store any error codes on the computer? And can they refuse the warranty work if they cannot confirm that the problem exists?

I am just hoping to get it replaced for free under warranty and avoid any related expense in future.

 

Ok. So, the downfall of having dash operation if it isn't necessary? Everything is a little looser and more prone to vibration, squeaking, etc. There are some codes that are set for network communication, but I'm not sure if they require a number of trips without the error for them to clear, either way, it might show up in the code history. I wouldn't mess with it if there hasn't been an issue, but you may want to know if it has failed in the past.
As it was explained to me by someone who repairs them, the firmware on one of the cluster chips sends stray messages into the CAN network causing trouble with the whole network. The guy that owned my 2005 before me said the car ran for a month straight because he was in the FLA. Keys on vacation, the dash went dark and he couldn't power the car off. It happened a couple times with me, finally it went dark for good, then I had trouble with it too.

It doesn't feel good to have to lie, but then it doesn't feel good knowing that the part can cause trouble at anytime. I checked the applicable VIN range for the problem, mine hit the lottery and is right in the middle of that range.



Also, from what I read about it, this is not a "if-it-happens" problem but more of a "when-it-happens" problem. Toyota should have done the right thing and replaced the part under a recall instead of this 'extended warranty' mid-way solution. But I won't fault them for trying to save some money, and by that same token I'd like to save some money too.

As for the "if ain't broke don't fix it" approach, I am debating the same thing. Especially since the local Toyota dealer is sure to come up with a list of other problems that "I must fix asap" if I take the car in (previous experience with the dealer) and try to squeeze me for whatever they can get. I still have a few weeks to figure this out before the 9-years are up.

IMO, if I don't get it replaced now the downfall is that the instrument cluster starts acting up at around 150K (which is when most people seem to report the issue). It will probably take me about two years to add those additional 30K miles and the car would be well beyond the 9-year warranty. At that point I can hope that someone is still selling those $120 repairs one eBay and fix it myself or pony up the cash to get it done at a Toyota dealer.

I am getting a Mini VCI cable and will check for any codes as soon as I get it.

Does Toyota have a Recall on this ??
