Ok Now Would you Buy a Prime? (POLL)

In 3-5 years I might buy one used

 

The 5-seats thing doesn't matter to me. Prius isn't wide enough for 5 people anyway in my opinion.

The cargo deck is stupid, but I can live with it because of the little bit of under-floor storage that the hatchback doesn't have. A little bit of underfloor storage is worth more to me than 3 inches of height under the glass. Height under the tonneau cover doesn't mean anything to me.

The spare tire thing is a safety blanket, but in 30 years of driving, I've never needed a spare tire except when a tire failed due to neglect. With better monitoring, better tires, in-car pressure monitoring, a plug kit and compressor, and a cell phone, I'll be fine. I'll get rid of the goo Toyota gives me.

More Ev range would be nice, but with 54MPG on gas and an 11.3 gallon tank, range anxiety just doesn't exist.

I'd be more interested in E-Four than the solar option by far. Still bummed they aren't bringing that to the US, especially for the Prime where the battery power is more than sufficient to run the dual motor and E-Four all at the same time.

 

Cons : no 5. Seat
can easily be overloaded due to 70 kg reduced load capacity
probably very smal and flat trunk (with no tie downs ?)
no rear wiper (yes I use it a lot! )
maybe slightly slower acceleration 0-60
a bit too low to the ground (same goes for liftback !)

Pros : 25 miles EV range
great fuel efficiency once battery is depleted
even more quieter than liftback due to additional sound deadning
pre-heat and pre-cool feature
solar roof (Europe) may even further reduce load capacity...
LED-Matrix headlights (Europe)

I have to see it in person first,before I decide if the pros an overcome the cons !

 

2-in cargo space lost?
I am inclined to go with used PiP (mucho space) or wait for v Prime.
Or a hybrid used v ...plug-in for me is extremely optional.
I like the solar idea but just gimme a (wireless) socket on the car...I'll put the panels on my garage roof
I get no CARB state subsidies, so I do not have to factor that in

P.S.- I think Prime is a cool car and will do well with commuters in CA/CARB states and CO and Canada places with big incentives. We constantly have 5 in our Gen2 Prius ...I am not even sure a Gen3 Prius would work as well.

I need to see it in person also. but here's my take, pretty similar to yours...

Cons:
-25 mile EV range too short for my 55 mile one way commute
-decreased cargo space
-no spare - again, 55 mile commute leaves little options if a blowout happens
-no rear wiper - how do I back into my garage on a rainy day?
-too low - old guys like me can fall into it, but climbing out is difficult.
-PLEASE work with DOT to bring the LED-matrix headlights to the USA.
-no all wheel drive - required in the snow belt.
-heated seats without ventilated seats???
-ugly predator jaws front end.
-sacrificed coefficient of drag for style
-lights on bumper corners in perfect place for damage with minor collisions
-too much reliance on touch screen? I like knobs, dials and levers - easier to find without taking eyes off road
-limited color choices
-no android auto

Pros:
-25 mile EV range results in not too much added battery weight and covers the rush hour stop and go portion of my commute
-cargo space may still be enough - need to see in person
-no spare = less weight = better efficiency. Hoping for progress with run-flat tires.
-HUD and technology - dynamic cruise etc. predictive driving sounds interesting
-high efficiency of power train
-space-age looking predator jaws front end (can't make up my mind if pro or con)
-pricing

 

What under floor storage? Haven't seen this mentioned before.

Only 24 cm boot height under the tonneau cover is probably a deal breaker for me.

Are these side spaces bigger than the ones I the gen2? is there much room in there?

I average about 1 trip a year with 5 people, and find it adequate. The last trip had 3 men all 6' or taller in the rear seating area. A couple hikers underestimated their hike and ran out of daylight. I gave them a 25 min ride on steep gravel roads back to their car.

 

I see I can vote for multiple choices and then vote, unlike the general election in a couple weeks.

I said yes, but the no spare is making me mad. I plan to get one from Tire Rack for <$200 and carrying it behind one of the seats for cross country driving. I have never had 5 people in my Gen 3 in 7 years - or even 4.

 

I don't think there is any Plug-In the whole USA with a spare tire.
Wonder if that is still true, with so many new models?
Last time I said that, an Aussie member here said Leaf down under has a spare tire option.
Guess you don't want to be in the Outback without a spare.

 

My thoughts, had to circumvent the 2 choice limit, lol.

Regarding the circled point, I'm not trying to be a "dog in the manger", I'm just happy with our 2010. We're low mileage, it's in great shape, I like it's ergonomics, storage, simplicity of dash without a "Multi Function Display", lot's of things. I'm a vocal naysayer on the 2016's exterior and interior from the get go, there's that. I don't need the complexity of plug-in, fine where I am.

 

But how will you secure the spare tire?

 

I have 5 in my PiP often enough that 4 just won't do. The rear deck doesn't bother me. The spare tire is a nuisance but is a necessary evil that I am still shocked I've gotten used to. It was a deal breaker for me when the PiP first came out. It wasnt a deal breaker when the car got discounted by thousands of $, towards the end of its first model year.

25 miles EV range is great if not for the Volt and it has 5 seats with Apple Car Play and Android Auto instead of Entune. I carry people more than I do cargo so the smaller trunk space is of no concern.
