Laura already cleared up for us a week ago that when her exclamation-car icon highlights, it is without highlighting the battery icon.

That might not be a lot of information, but it is what we have to go on until she can plug in her scanner, which she is buying, and read actual codes to learn more.

Until then, so much "well, it sounds like maybe you have leprosy ... somebody else had leprosy once ..." probably isn't doing much besides giving her stuff to worry about.

It should be soon enough that she can ask the car what it's going on about.

    Hi Banjo Bob!

Been awhile since I've been on here -- regarding my 02 Prius.

Since the last time I was here, I haven't had any issues with warning lights coming on until today, and it wasn't even that cold! (55 deg.) Since this has been a sporadic, seemingly cold-temp.- related issue, I haven't pursued the "problem".

So today I stopped in at the local auto repair shop (the same one that told me my car's carb was plugged up and that could be why the lights came on) they insisted they had a "prius" code reader and when I pulled in, the lights, of course, had gone off, but the guy said he could read the codes from the past few hours, so what he found was error code #P3191 car won't start. ( the car was starting just fine). then he went and looked it up and came back with: Crank sensor or Throttle body unit. When I told my hubs that, he said those things have to do with a carbeurator, not a fuel-injected vehicle. I even asked the repair guy if he was sure it was for a Prius!

I did go to the website you mentioned above - the one that trains hybrid mechanics and the closest one is 5 hrs. away.

As the cold season approaches, I'm worried this will keep happening..... some have suggested a new battery might be in order, to rule that issue out. Otherwise, we're still humming along, with no repairs on a 68K mile Prius. Been so happy with the reliability/gas mileage of this car! Want it to last a long, long time. Any recommendations for me? How's that banjo coming along? :)

As usual with husband's, he is wrong. o_O

I cleaned the throttle body in my Camry myself, and had the sensor replaced by my mechanic. That Camry is fuel injected. As for the Prius, it also has both.

If either of those have anything to do with your problem. Got me. If I had to guess, I would guess throttle body because of the cold-related, but realized, my guess is as good as throwing a dart at a target.

If the code regarding Crank Sensor is correct. That will cause a no start issue. This is completely by chance, but I have another vehicle that stalled while driving, and then randomly, would not start. It turned out to be the Crank Position Sensor. Modern engines need this sensor to tell the computer where the crank shaft and pistons are, so that it knows when to send fuel and when there is combustion in the engine. It used to be the job of the distributer cap, which is no longer used.

The hybrid training place is only one of many--and their referrals probably don't even cover 20% of what's available. There's a great Hybrid shop here in Tucson and it's not listed. In fact, they don't list ANY hybrid shops in Arizona? C'mon! None in Phoenix? Same in Oregon, btw, no Hybrid shops in the entire state? That's just stupid.

I guess I'd ask around. Ask at the local NAPA and other chain auto parts stores. Check for leads at local independent auto repair shops, too. Atomic Auto is in Portland is probably too far, right? Check other closer cities. Boise, tri Cities in Washington, Yakima, etc. Small towns aren't at all likely to have hybrid shops, tho.

You know, a can of throttle cleaner or brake cleaner will remove most of the deposits in the throttle body. Easy to do and you could do that yourself. Throttle bodies took the place of carburetors on mass produced cars in the mid 80's, your "mc kanick" sounds like a shit for brains--I wouldn't let him touch my Prius.

    Brian,

If we know of a good hybrid shop that is not on their list, just email them a referral. I did that several years ago and they added the three shops that I suggested. Of course they will reserve the right to check the record of any new referral before they add the shop to their list.
