Prime destined to be doa?

don't you mean if you're driving hundreds of miles without recharging? After all if the Gen 2 volt were on the open road for 50 miles or so, it might not use gas at all. And even say 60 or 70 miles, the much smaller EV range of the Prime wouldn't yet compensate for the ev range differences .
That raises an interesting question . . . considering prime & volts ev & ICE EPA differences - it'd be nice to know at what mileage point would the prime be able to make up the difference via its higher ice MPG. That might be important to folks who regularly Drive longer ranges without being able to recharge. It could make a difference in their decision making purchase/process

Tesla M3 will be a great vehicle,no doubt about that,it would currently be the only EV I would consider buying and that's because of the SC infrastructure.
Chevy Bolt,Leaf and others my be good too,but if the only available charging station is out of order,then what ?

 

that's not necessarily true, you have to look at the totality of your driving.

don't forget the price equation, when trying to figure out if volt or prime is a fit.

 

The nearest supercharger station to me is about 25 miles. The nearest Chargepoint is about 1 mile.

 

Yes but we don't have many quick charging stations in Germany,probably Tesla owns the most of them and they are for Teslas only of course .
So if I finally reach a charging station when needing charging,and the only one available is out of order,or occupied and others allready waiting,that would be really annoying! !
You don't have that problem with a PHV !
For Tesla it's a different story,as firstly there aren't many around yet in comparison to "normal" vehicles ,so having to wait because all SCs are occupied is rather unlikely (for now !) and secondly they usally don't just have one or two of them .

 

That's why I wouldn't own a BEV with less than a 750-1000 mile range.

 

With the federal tax credit, the price difference is around $4000, and I think the Volt gets another $1000 in California. Then being out for a year, a deal might be easier to find on it; $1500 bonus cash at the Chevy site right now.

 

deals make all the difference, but can only be used to compare on an individual basis. always worth getting your best price for comparison shopping, same model or cross.

personally, i would be more interested in which vehicle would use the least gas based on my typical driving, then test driving the various models to see which ones i could live with.

 

Nearby superchargers are irrelevant. They are not meant for locals, just people traveling through.

 

Rebate is the same in California. Also, the Prime has $500 manufacturer incentive right out the gate.

When I recently *traveled* to Kansas City, the nearest Supercharge station to where I was staying was 40 minutes each way.

 

I'm of the opposite opinion. I find the Prime extremely attractive and expect Toyota will have a hard time keeping them in stock.

I'll buy one as soon as I can. But the problem I have right now is it will cost about the same to charge the battery as it does to fill the tank for a 25 mile run. Our electricity rate is 15 cents per KWh. The EV mode will be fun to drive but won't pay back until gas prices rise.

 

if you wait until gas prices rise, you'll wind up paying more for the car. buy now, charge later.

 

I think the emphasis on HOV stickers is way overblown. There are limited places where the HOV lane is even available, and even some of those clog up and don't run faster than regular lanes. Only if you live in very densely populated areas, and drive in the limited places where HOV makes sense will that make a difference. Those that think this is a Prime killer are short sighted. The Prime is going to be available in all states. HOV lane only represent a tiny percentage of driver conditions in certain states and in certain areas.

Caltrans reports that less than 2% of the state roads have HOV lanes.

 

Well, unfort. we'll probably never know the answer as the state-by-state model sales are not disclosed. I would think CA car pool stickers were very important for PiP, not sure about Prime. Maybe after sales start we will get some feel for it.

Clearly, states like CO adding add'l $5000 rebate for Prime will grab some sales too. Many more states offering rebates now than when PiP came out.

 

There is likely some monetary benefit to using EV instead of fuel since it doesn't add any mechanical wear to the combustion engine. I'd say that's worth about 1 or 2 cents per mile.

I like the enthusiasm though. Looking forward to hearing from the new owners once they spend some time with the Prime.
