I thought maybe it was the throttle body (just had cleaned) which was in dire need of cleaning but I still have a rattle after I've been idling for awhile and I give it some gas. Doesn't seem to happen when I go above 30 and stay at the same mph but the minute I slow down or come to a stop sign, as soon as I give it gas again I get the rattle/putter!! Seems to occur allot on hotter days as well. Any insight would be super!! Thanks!

Oh I also have a rough idle when it's recharging my battery, connection?!?

There is a free extended warranty offered by Toyota for a defective EGR valve.

Don't go in expecting an all positive experience at the dealership. They will very likely want a "diagnosis charge" to ascertain the problem, and could end up: no trouble code, therefore no problem.

Just expect the worst, then maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised, lol.

Oh man, yeah my dealership charges $99 off the bat :/ is it an actual recall or just something they have seen allot of therefore are fixing free of charge?

The recall notice states that you have to have the P0401 code and have it verified.

Some on here reported this and the dealer only replacing the valve. This still leaves the cleaning aspect:).

Do you have any lights on the dash when the rattle occurs? How many miles on your Prius?

Nope no lights unfortunately, and we're just over 100,000.

What maintenance outside of the manual has been done? Checked the PCV valve? Any oil consumption? Have you ever used any fuel injector cleaner? What type of gas do you buy (top tier, or whatever is available)?Ever clean the egr pipe?

    Keep the answers coming:).

Outside of the throttle body getting cleaned this week nothing outside of routine maintenance. I really haven't notice an increase in oil consumption, my gas mileage hasn't been up to par but I attributed that to the throttle body. My mechanic said fuel injector cleaner doesn't work so no lol:) I did buy the cheapest gas this week (wawa) which I figured had something to do with it being more noticeable this week. But this seems to happen regardless of where I buy. So sounds like I should check with Toyota to see what they can resolve and if they want to charge me go to my local mechanic who will charge me 1/4 of what the dealership would:)

Sounds like your intake manifold and egr system might be clogging or have restrictions.

But it sounds like your mechanic is providing "excellent" advice and service.

    All the best(y)

Have the same issue. How much would a egr valve cleaning cost at dealership or mechanic generally?

A dealership typical won’t clean, only do parts replacement. The parts alone would be about a grand, and likely at least 3 hour’s labour on top of that. It’s basically ridiculous to go that route; none of those parts, with possible exception of the EGR valve, need replacement.

Independent mechanics knowledgeable and willing to do a thorough cleaning are few and far between. Tampa Hybrids in Florida and Hybrid Pit stop (in LA?) are the only ones I’ve heard of.

it’s good you’ve posted your location; a PriusChat member local to you might be willing to help out. If you can DIY and just need a bit of help and tips, that’s the best scenario.

The DIY cost is basically a days labour, a few cleaning products, access to fairly standards tools. Maybe also replacement of the intake manifold gaskets, depending on the miles.

see first two links in my signature; on a phone turn it landscape to see signature.
