I do not advise a Prius in your situation.
While exceptionally reliable, once something goes wrong it often costs $3000 to $5000. This make the Prius a poor choice for a low cost car for those unable to pay if anything go wrong.
A nice older Corolla or Fit may be the car you can afford.

I agree, a "cheap" Prius would be problematic, a four cylinder Toyota or Honda in your price range would be good, if you insist on no emissions, be ready to pay, if emissions are of no concern, grab a 15 year old Mercedes or Audi or whatever and party with the crib

Define cheap budget...I'm on a budget but my payments for my Prius is less then $250 a month.

Have you considered buying from a dealership and financing? As others have said, repairs can be super expensive with these types of cars. Buying a certified used gets you the left over power train warranty and usually extra stuff too.

Other good cars with pretty good mpg are honda civics. They are reliable cars and can get up to 40 (maybe more) mpg highway

Hi I'm also considering importing a 2003 Prius from Japan as its super cheap. I can afford the major repairs IF anything goes wrong. One model I'm looking at has only 10,000 miles - for a 13 year old Prius probably not used alot in Japan would u all weigh in whether this low of mileage is a huge red flag or potentially a benefit (given battery not used much yet??).

Ours was under $3k including TT&L with two NEW tires installed.

    Now THAT is CHEAP!

We (I) looked l o n g and hard, ran like 100 vehicles thru CarFax and MOST were complete junk, you should know that only about 30 Prii were in that group tho, we were not "set" on a Prius - but DAMNED GLAD we bought one!!!!!!
