    Steps
    1. Call the local prius parts and give them your VIN so they can lookup the part number for the FOB that matches your car. Keep the part number handy to then search on Ebay for a new or refurbished FOB (VIRGIN)
    2. Look on Ebay for the right part and make sure you contact the seller to make sure it is VIRGIN and the blank is not cut yet and order it prices range from 100 - 200
    3. Call your local car locksmith that can reprogram your fob and cut your blank and don't do it at the Toyota Stealership(Dealership) . Note you need to at least have one FOB that is working so they can easily re-program the second one.
    4. Total cost 170 vs 500 at the Stealership.

This is what I did and I am giving back to PC on my experience.

Back in 2010, I purchased the software and hardware to program a new FOB. I believe they still sell the software/hardware. Go to ebay and search on "mini vci for toyota tis techstream". Cost is about $25.00. Somebody will have to confirm that this is the same (or maybe better) software from 6 years ago. You will still have to find a locksmith who can cut the key, but that isn't very expensive. This would be a much cheaper way to go, especially if you will be programming more than 1 FOB.

Also, you should have at least a total of 3 FOBs. 1 for the driver. 1 to keep at home in case you lose it. And 1 to hide in the car in case you (temporarily) lose the FOB while away from home (you'll still have to figure out your own way to get into your car). You might want another one for your significant other to carry keep. I don't know whether the FOB for the Gen IV Prius is the same as for the Gen III.

Hello I am investigating the "mini vci for toyota tis techstream"

I do not mind doing it myself but I want to be able to program gen 2 and gen3 prius cars.

Not for Gen3, but I bought refurbished FOB for my PRIME from eBay. Called and asked a local locksmith to reprogram it, but they refused to use any refurb FOB. Their reason was that it takes longer to re-program refurb FOB since they will have to first erase any trace of the old program on it.

The locksmith doesn't need to erase anything if the FOB has been "virgin-ized" -- that's what the seller has done (erased the old program).

I bought a "virgin" used FOB on ebay for about $90. I programmed it using Techstream. I wouldn't have been able to program it if the seller hadn't "virgin-ized" it first.
