Well more than likely the battery is fine, probably not 100%... I would suggest more driving before taking it on a long trip but from what I can tell the battery seems to be taking a charge better which is encouraging.

The OP doesn't have a smartphone...

Who cares whether it is true or not. The OP came here for advice, everything else the OP has said seem reasonable. Says he doesn't have a smart phone or digital camera, yeah there are people who don't have those things believe it or not. I know a few folks around here that still have a Nokia from 2002, how the phone works to this day is beyond me. Until there's a more valid reason to accuse the OP of being deceitful I think we should assume that the OP has been honest. If you don't believe the OP then don't post in this thread, it's that simple... If he said his Prius did the quarter mile in 10 seconds then yeah I would be a bit concerned about the OP's integrity.

Its a reasonable story. Stranger things have happened.

It sounds like the battery meter or whatever its called is the faulty component. Theres obviously nothing wrong with a battery if the car is getting 49+ mpg.

As far as the drive goes, why not? I did the opposite. Bought my car in south florida from a dealer that bought it at auction, having no idea what could be wrong with it. Turns out, P1121 code and needed a new blower motor. Not too bad. I drove it from FL to canada and back in one week. Solid road car, and the regenerative braking is an awesome automatic deceleration feature when you encounter speed traps but don't want to pound on the brakes.

It likely won't get many miles, which is why I'm thinking about taking it to FL at the end of the month. I can't see having gone through all of this the past few weeks only to let it sit here till spring.
If it fails in FL, its no different than if it failed here, I actually have more tools and resources down there, and it'll have a spot in the garage full time. Here its the odd car that shares garage time with one of my trucks. If the car just don't work out for me I'd think about selling it but not unless I know the battery is OK. So far it seems to be getting better as far as the battery charge, it seems to stay at full longer and only on occasion dip down to 7 bars.

I also suppose that even with constant A/C use this will get better mpg than anything else I own. My concern would be it not being able to keep up its charge running 100% of the time down there with the A/C on. Of course, it would probably be the case up here in the summer as well.
When I'm driving, I can better deal without heat than not having A/C these days, just so the windshield doesn't frost up I'm fine in the winter, but I won't drive if I don't have the air on when its hot or humid outside. Which is the case probably 90% of the time in south FL.

Florida has been cooling off quite a bit already. I have the doors and windows open, no a/c and it actually feels cool for the first time since april or may. It may hit 90 for a couple hours during the day, but not for long periods of time.

Taking a prius on a road trip is the true test of its viability as a commuter vehicle. I wasn't sold on it until I took it on a 17 hour drive. After that, I knew I would likely never drive anything else again. That is, until they make something even better.

Also, with the thought of taking this to FL in a month or so I swapped the wheels tonight. The tires that were on it were the first set I came across when I first dug the car out of storage. It had Blizzak snow tires all around on it. It came with those and two other sets, one is the original set of tires and rims, the other is a set of new rims with a set of Michelin Hydro Edge tires. I put the Michelin tires on it for now. After just a quick run around the block it seems like it rides a lot smoother with these tires vs. the snow tires. The original tires were Goodyear Integrity's.

The temps look good right now in FL but the humidity is still high. It looks like rain all week too.
I'm one of those people who sweat profusely when its humid, so A/C is a must. I basically head to FL in the winter for the fishing. I'd stay all year but haven't done that since 2010.
For me, I don't look at the Prius as a commuter car, since I'm retired I don't commute anywhere daily.
I just like driving something different for a change. I'm thinking that the cargo area in this may suit my needs well down there when it comes to fishing and running back and forth to the boat.

By the time I leave for FL, the car will have roughly as many miles on it here as it will get driving to FL. To me that should be a fair test of what its capable of. I think if it was going to give me trouble it would have done so already in the 450 or so miles I've put on it so far. The only other option I see would be to buy a charger and leave it on charge while I'm away and I really don't like leaving something plugged in like that all winter while I'm 1100 miles away.

If you are talking about a HV battery charger, this would be a bad idea.

You'd be better off discharging the HV battery completely and letting sit, rather than leaving it on a charger all winter. Then charge it back up when you get back. This is the accepted method of long term storage of NiMH batteries.

Hopefully you will take it to FL, so it will be a moot point.

Under normal conditions the car will keep the battery from having too low of a charge, that being said I think the only worry would the battery failing.... If the battery meter is now staying towards the top it is probably ok when considering all the other posts you made. I say, if you keep it, drive it as much as you can, if you are leaning towards selling it I would not drive it any further... Not too many 2005 Prii under 1,000 miles.

On the matter of a potentially malfunctioning MFD you may want to check with a Toyota dealer concerning a recall on the MFD. There may have been a batch of early failures on the MFD.

I live in GA and I do have property in N FL , it gets HOT. Hot enough to burn of clear coats on darker colored cars, crack the dash, shrink and crispen the plastics in a Corvette I was looking to buy.

If you are passing by the Atlanta area and heed help PM me.

Are you saying the battery is now staying towards the top with green bars and only occasionally goes down to blue?

    I wonder this too?
Mine sure does not act like that .
When driving the bars will vary pretty widely as the car runs with battery assist until it needs the charge it seems and is constantly draining and charging all the time not staying in the Green.

I typically get green when going down hills but most of the time it stays between blue and when low it's two purple bars. I have been making use of the engine Brake when the go down hills.

@kinglew , do you have anything to contribute to this thread? If not, why does it matter what he has? He's asking for advice.
