So I have prius 2010 with about 294K on it I know its high but it was working pretty darn well till recently. First noticed a rattling noise in the car and then a few days later the check engine light appeared. The codes P0301 and P0302 came up. So decided to get the all 4 spark plugs and ignition coils changed and throttle body cleaning was done as well. After having the spark plugs replaced the next day coolant light appeared and the engine coolant resorvoir was low. No apparent external or internal leaks. I have had to fill the coolant pretty much every week. Not sure if these issues are related or separate. The rattling noise still comes up when driving 0-20miles then stops. Just some background intake Manifold was replaced in 2014. Also it appears my oil consumption is being affected as well just had it filled 3 weeks ago and recently received message for oil maintence. Any thoughts on possible direction or solution. Was told by mechanic I could replace the engine but that he would not advise it. It was working really well before all of this there has to be some solution to the misfiring? Let me know if there are any thoughts. Thanks

With also 300k it's possible it seen it last days. Coolant loss can be detected with a sniffer in the exhaust If you had the plugs replaced did they read the burn history on the plugs , cylinders that is using coolant the plug will be clean like running water to decarbon a engine. Pressurizing cylinder with 150 psi some times will pinpoint which cylinder with air escaping into the coolant system. Most likely a head gasket or crack cylinder head is my guess! Good luck

Just wanted to know why you are reccomending a 2012 engine for a 2010 model? Is it better or different? I guess as long as its a 1.8L?

As long as it is a 1.8. Believe that was to show you the engines are readily available and the cost.

Within a generation, there is very little change in the engine, as the cost to re-certify it is prohibitive. So within a generation, I would use the newest (least mileage) engine I could afford.

2004 to 2009 used a 1.5 l engine, I bet they are very similar, the 1.5 in the C is not as similar.
    2010 to 2015 used a 1.8 l engine, as did the V. I would not expect the 2016 1.8 l engine to be a good replacement.
