I'm in the market for a 2006 Prius... Local Toyota dealer offers the Prepaid Maintenance Plan at $870 for 4 years / 55K mi. Any input on whether this sort of plan is worth it? I scanned a Maintenance Schedule on a 2004 Prius on the web and it didn't seem like there was much involved other than routine oil changes and a lot of visual inspections... Thanks...

$870 or $670? I don't think its worth it. Most of the maintenance for the first 55,000 miles consists of simple oil changes, tire rotation, and inspections every 5,000 miles. The only exception: there's a cabin air filter and ICE air filter replaced at 30,000. Figuring the oil change and tire rotation at $45 each visit at my dealer, times 11 planned visits, I come up with $495. That leaves the cabin air filter and ICE air filter to be done at 30,000 miles, but you have $175 you haven't spent with the cheaper plan, and $375 for the more expensive one. I can't imagine replacing those would cost you that much. Money has a time value ... its much better to spend it later than it is to spend it today.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(fshagan @ May 21 2006, 09:17 PM) </div> tks... i don't have the maint schedule infront of me... what is the street price of a 15k and 30k mile service? i typically get my cars serviced at the dealer... i know my bay area dealer is always sending out coupons.
My dealer charged me $645 for the maintenance plan (4 years/55k miles). It wasn't a no-brainer for me, though. I'll get 11 oil changes and tire rotations. Assuming a $45 average charge, that's worth $450 by itself. So, I'm paying $195 for the 15k, 30k and 45k "major" maintenance visits. The thing that really clinched it for me was the inclusion of the roadside assistance plan. Since I only have one car, I can now drop AAA Motor Club, which saves another $200 over 4 years. Oh, and I understand that there is a time value of money. But, I am also assuming that the cost of maintenance will rise at a comparable rate in the next four years.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(gnagel @ May 22 2006, 07:58 AM) </div> I got my 15k checkup done about 3 weeks ago, it ran me right around $70. The oil change and tire rotation has been right at 39.95. So after tax around 42.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(heimdm @ May 31 2006, 06:09 PM) </div> the local dealer in the bay area wants$150 for 15k service and $58 for 5k and $300 for 30k. With these numbers the prepaid makes sense?
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(mdh @ May 31 2006, 09:16 PM) </div> someone please help me with this. the least ive ever paid to have my prius serviced at the dealer was 400$ and the 20k one i had 2 weeks ago was 700$. ive called three other dealers around here and thats seems to be about their average. i cant afford this at all is there any place in ny, nj or ct that charges what you guys are talking about?
