Yes. I replace the filters myself, so that's not a problem. I have scheduled an oil change and tire rotation this weekend.

I just called my local import mechanic and he quoted me a total of $227 for parts, labor and taxes to replace spark plugs. He said that you have to remove the intake manifold to remove and replace plugs...Does all that sound about right?

No you don't need to touch the intake manifold. Some people remove the wipers arms and wiper transmission so they can remove the cowl for better access. But if you like a tight squeeze it can be done without. If he told you he needs to remove the Intake manifold he is lying or thinks you have a V6 (which means he's clueless)... not good. Maybe he's trying to add on labor. The total process shouldnt take a decent mechanic any longer than 45 minutes start to finish. Most shops will charge an hour per 4 plugs.

OK. That's not good. Guess I'll have to go to the stealership to get it done....?

Per service instructions. Remove wiper arms, transmission and cowl. Remove engine cover. Remove Ignition coil. Remove spark plug. Reverse to install. Nothing about a manifold.

And to be extra persnickity the labor time for the expected repair time is 1.5 hours. @ $100/hr you should be looking at $150 plus parts. Which are spark plugs. Should be about $20-40 for 4 plugs. So total should be just shy of $200. Your call.

I did this myself and it took a couple hours. Reassembly went very fast, so I think I could do it again in 90 minutes.

However, I should add that what took longest is that I fastidiously cleaned everything I removed. The engine had 97,000 and four years, and all that stuff you remove is the cabin air intake, which gets caked in soot which I don't want to breathe. Spark plug install is your chance to get a nice clean cabin air intake.

I cleaned up the whole firewall area and reached into the fresh air intake as far as possible. I also replaced the cabin air filter and cleaned everything I could around it.

Doesn't everybody love clean air in the cabin?

Particularly the dealer, with the installed price of those cabin air filters.

Great idea to clean it all up while you are in there!

Maybe a good idea: print out the instruction for getting car into inspection mode, keep in the glove box. Toyota should put this in the Owners Manual, or better, on a plastic laminated alert card.

It's a simple procedure: Turn the vehicle to accessory mode, Ready-off. Depress the accelerator two times fully. Put the vehicle in neutral. Depress the accelerator two times fully. Put the vehicle back into park. Depress the accelerator two times fully.
