Anyone know what size speakers come standard? I have searched and haven't found anything definitive. The stock stereo is a bit weak in volume. I'm thinking of replacing them with some that are more efficient. Given that these are stock I'm guessing I can increase volume by 3db to maybe 6db easily and probably cheaply as well
Doesn't look like the 2014 is any different than the previous years. So it should be 6x9" in the front doors, 6.5" in the rear doors and the little squakers (tweeters) in the front dash. You will need adapters though at the mounting pattern doesn't match standard speakers. I'm not sure if you would really get any more volume out of new speakers though. My guess is that they designed the stock speakers to be light and efficient, over quality. So new speakers would sound better but would probably be less efficient. This is just a guess on my part. I haven't done any specific testing. The stock speakers in my 2012 seemed plenty loud. But then again, running some Infinity 6.5" in the front doors off the stock HU seems plenty loud as well. And of course even better with my amp and subwoofer. =)
Thanks for the size info. That's very helpful. Haven't been able to find anything reliable on the net. But cheap factory speakers usually means low (less than probably 96 db sensitivity) efficiency. Part of the reason they're stock. I can double the volume at the same power level by increasing that by about 6 dbs if anyone has replaced them and still has the old ones the numbers on the speaker frame would be most helpful in determining who manufactured them. If there is a name in them, that would be nice too. Although that many times just tells you who's name they're sold under. Thanks in advance.
6x9 front and 6.5 rear. If you order your speakers from Crutchfield, the free plastic bracket they will give you will NOT match exactly with the predrilled holes in the door so you will have to drill your own holes and use retainer clips. The other (and much stronger) alternative is to make your own MDF mounting rings.
Thanks guys for the video and advice on where to get them. Checked out the video. I'm wondering if those are neo mag speakers and that's why they're so small. Although, I sort of doubt it on a stock speaker. Neodymium mag speakers sound too JBL, hi-fi(ish) in guitar amps I've tried them in but 5 oz. of neo-mag has about the same energy as about 12 oz. of AlNiCo mag and about 40 oz. of ceramic used mostly today. I would love nothing better than to stick a pair of old D130 12's in there somewhere.
FYI- When I added the rear 6.5 door speaker it was hard to hear because they are so low in the door and behind the front seats. If I had to do it over I would do a component with a tweeter higher up on the door panel. My solution was to add new dash speakers. That brought the sound stage so forward that I moved the audio fader to more back and made the rear speakers come to life a little better. So in this positions I am more surrounded by sound now. my2cents.
Thread resurrection: Bought 2014 Prius Five and it has allegedly a JBL audio system in it (not tech package), but man, the sound is weak.... tinny and weak. Will upgrading the speakers resolve this? I do not want an aftermarket head unit in the car or any complicated amp setup. Thanks.
