My 2012 PIP used to get just over 10 EV miles on my hilly, high-speed NYC-area commute, and now in August 2016 (with less than 50k miles), has dropped to less than 8 miles per charge, so I can no longer make it to work or back on EV. At what point should I consider this falloff to be a "defect" and claim it on my extended warranty?

@Prius Team, any idea? What is Toyota's tolerance for battery degradation?

no warranty unless it throws a battery code. snafu = situation normal, all fowled up.

when you say 'extended warranty', did you buy a separate warranty for the battery with written specs as to what qualifies?

When I bought my 2012 PIP, I read the Toyota warranty as only considering the hybrid battery to be defective when it reached a point that the car would not operate properly as a hybrid Prius. If my reading is correct, the deterioration you describe would not amount to a defect. I have no idea what your extended warranty covers, but I doubt it is different in this respect than the Toyota warranty. So far as I know, the coverage of the warranty has not been tested.

I'm a new guy to the forum, however I've been in a few other forums in the past with manufacturers involved. Typically not as large as Toyota.

Let me just say, knowing they are involved and participating in these discussions is AWESOME !!!

I just became a member on here as I was looking for a solution to this exact same problem. I have 2 PiP's a 2012 advance and a 2014. The 2012 (27,000 miles) gets a consistent 8 miles of range where as the 2014 with (16,000 miles) gets 14-15. It's been bothering me and I wanted to find a solution... May I PM you my information to findout a resolution to this problem?

I have a 2013, Advanced with 53K miles on it and I can not get more than 8 miles on mine. It was always around 12 until recently. What do I do to get this looked at or fixed?

I thought that this was normal with Lithium based batteries? My 2012 PIP started with 14 miles of range at purchase and now can only manage 9 miles on a charge. I have 75K on mine. I use to charge it often but have stopped this year because my electricity costs more than gasoline right now.

I remember that when I considered the PIP, I also considered a Leaf but they sent me a questionnaire asking how I would feel if the range decreased by 40% over time, or if decreased 30% when it was cold. I figured I would not be able to make my commute on a cold day, three years after purchase of the Leaf.

when new, i was getting about 17 miles on my back road work commute. i'm down to about 14.5, so around 15%. toyota national has been trying to reach me, but my comcast phone has been erratic at best.
