80 MPH = Less than 40 MPG on the highway

I would use the Trip A for tank reading. (reset at each fill-up). I use Trip B for Oil change interval (reset at each oil change). Use the flag reading occasionally if i am doing a new trip or route to a specific location. And the odometer is not re-settable and will display the fuel economy for the life of the car. I've reset it to zero a couple times just to see what would happen. And after a short time it jumps back up to 62 MPG.

 

The Prius may well have more horsepower than any car I ever owned before, It SURE has more torque.

The odometer Mpg is absolutely re-settable... I did it today after my first fill up since the dealer fill up.

Not that I wanted to reset it at all, but all you have to do is go to the ECO screen on the big screen and hit the update bottom on the bottom right of the screen. That resets the ODO reading. Hitting the Clear button resets the ODO mpg anew also.

I didn't realize that was the case and thought that screen was to be used for tank to tank or trip to trip resets but now I know it resets the darn ODO. I was planning on using that screen as a tank to tank for comparison purposes and you will notice that on the top right of said screen the is a BEST mpg block. That shows obviously the best "tank" or trip or however you decide to use that screen.

The only way to never have the ODO reset would be to never "update" or "clear" that screen. Kinda mad that I did but I guess next tank I could always clear it out and start anew.

I know it's not directly answering your question because I had some other driving in there, but it's about 100 miles to cheyenne which is basically on the boarder of CO and WY. I don't remember off hand if the limit is 80 mph before you get to Cheyenne or not. But once past Cheyenne it's 80 mph and about 178 miles to Casper. Then another 178 miles back at 80 mph. So of my 484 miles about 356 of those miles were at 80 mph with a crap cross wind and I got 49.8 mpg. I would guess that the wind screwed me more than the speed.

 

So the dash odometer is not resettable. I will try the mpg on the odo screen. Sorry u messed up your system with the reset on account of me

 

The faster you go, in ANY vehicle, the more you have to energetically move air molecules out of the way to make room for the vehicle going forward.

Not sure why people find that surprising....

Did you hear, they reduced speed limit to 55mph back in the days of Oil Embargo 1970s ? That's to save gas.

A jet uses more fuel at 750mph than at 500mph.

 

^^^And yeah if you actually drive 55 on the highway this is attainable

-The above was my commute last week to work and is above distance with 9 miles highway @ 55 mph (I95) and a quarter city (Philly) and a quarter suburbs!! This was on a warm engine to be fair. Amazing!!

 

Lots of variables to consider. Weight, fuel type, warm up stage, wind etc. Was reading in Wikipedia that Bob Beaman's long jump was possible 12-inch longer than normal in the thin dry air, also 2 MPH wind. It rained before the other guys got to jump. Note his jump was over 2-ft over the record, so it is still one of the greatest sports moments of the century.

 

Well.... is that air speed or ground speed? And since it's a jet we should figure altitude into this as well because efficiency of 500 mph at 200 ft may be quite a bit worse than 750 mph at 40,000 ft.

There are about 20 miles that are 80+mph. On these, I average around 54mpg (odo), with air on, radio on, cruise control. I drive a Prius Two Eco.

 

I drive slightly over the speed limit but I don't think I've actually hit 80 yet. Actually my typical speed on the freeway is probably around 70 and at that rate the mileage is usually around 62 MPG or so. Even at or above 80, I'd find it hard to describe mid-40s MPG as "terrible" in my opinion. My 2011 Mustang GT (modified) used to get about 12 MPG at that speed and that's when gas was a lot more expensive.

 

Seems very low. I just returned from a trip from the SF bay area to Jackson, WY and back. 58 mpg there and 62 back. Much of the trip was at 75 mph on highway 80 and through southeastern Idaho.

That's thinking too much, sir. Paralysis in Analysis and it overwhelms the thinking then shuts down the ability to draw conclusions.

When you compare science tests, validity comes by holding all other variables CONSTANT. That means air pressure constant in this case. Remember PressureVolume=nRTemperature. Google pv=nrt.

Here's a simple experience if you can manage standing by the roadway safely. The outward air draft you feel from a 30mph car is less than one at 50mph car. The air molecules got moved, by the same object, at Higher speed has MORE energy and you can feel/hear it. It costs more gas to do that, more gas than necessary to cover the distance at lower speed.

Want to experience higher speed? Visit a NASCAR race track near you. You can then feel the air draft pressure of something moving way over 150mph (do wear ear plugs if you're new to this). While there, cars are similar in aerodynamics, pv=nrt is generally the same.

And yes, it takes a lot more energy to go at speeds beyond the sound barrier.

 

Hi - totally missed this one - sorry! I was also not posting in PC since a couple of weeks due to parents visiting, lack of time, friends visiting, etc....
I did drive a lot though. To test 80MPH (average?) I think I posted somewhere else back in Feb/March the result of tests conducted by Italian and German Auto magazines.
If you mean, what I get driving on the German highways, I got with 122km/h // 76mph average on a distance of about 160km // 100mi, an average consumption of 6L/100km // 39mpg.

 

I drive 65 (the speed limit) and average close to 70mpg with my PIP depending on itinerary.

If I drive in the right lane at 65, trucks come within 5 feet of my rear bumper and honk at me because they are going 70 when the speed limit for them is 55mph. If I drive 65 in the left lane, you guys come up behind me and honk and give me the finger because you are going 80 in a 65 mph zone.

WHAT LANE AM I SUPPOSED TO DRIVE IN??????????

You are not too far down the road from me. Try going 60 in the slow lane on the 10 freeway! Yes, the trucks will go around you, but they are so mad they try to clip your front bumper when they pull in and slam on their brakes! VERY DANGEROUS! Yes, they do have a "how's my driving" sign on the rear with an 800 number, which I call, but it does no good.

I am now using my new smart phone to record when some of the speed racers pass me on the right going 80/85/90, I can capture their license number and then pan down to record my speed. The CHP might find that information worth "investigating". The highest speed limit in California, I am aware of, is 70mph.

Now, I'm starting to get all worked up about this thread! Flame away!
