I have had my 2016 Prius 4 Touring with PCP for almost four weeks. I have successfully used dynamic cruise control every day. A couple days ago I tuned on cruise control, which was acknowledged by the warning "use only on expressways." Then when I tried to set a speed nothing happened. No acknowledgement, and when I took my foot off the accelerator pedal, the car slowed down even though there was no traffic in front of me. I tried to set it several times and also turned cruise control on and off a few times. The next day (yesterday) cruise control worked normally. Should I be concerned?
i wouldn't worry, sounds like it might be operator error, I screwed up one time when I first got my Prius, got rattled and couldn't get the damn thing started for quite a while, after I calmed down it worked fine. Good luck.
I got a bit frustrated with mine initially, as I was driving through roadworks with a 40km/hr speed limit - which in my last 3 cars, I'd set C/C to keep to 40 - but the Prius wouldn't set. Once the speed went up after the roadworks, it worked normally - I discovered that it won't set as low as 40 - and that you have to be doing about 50 to get it to set, but then you can reduce the speed, but not down to 40.
Every once in a while, I think I turned it on and set. And see on the screen a picture of the cruise stick with arrows how to set. I have been thinking I may be doing it to quickly. That is pushing in the button to turn it on and then quickly pulling the stick down to set. I never noticed this in the gen 2 I had. But I use the dynamic cruise control so much more now.
As Alan says above, you have to be travelling at 40 km/h, which equates to 25 mph, or more to set it.
Actually, not quite true, according to the manual. "Dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range can be set when ●The shift position is in D. ●Vehicle speed is above approximately 50 km/h (30 mph). However, when a preceding vehicle is detected, the dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range can be set even if the vehicle speed is at or below approximately 50 km/h (30 mph)."
True - since I wrote that, I've discovered that. Only thing is, if that vehicle "disappears" at a lower speed (which I haven't quite worked out what), it seems to disengage the DRCC with an indication that there is no vehicle to follow anymore (not sure of the precise wording). It's an experiment in progress.
Concerned - no. But I would take it to dealer and let him sort it out. (Even if it is operator error, it's the dealer's problem)
Keep us posted. I am sure it was not user error. But you never know about these things. Seems that happened to me once but could not duplicate. Might have been it timed out. Do these time out after a period of time? Willie Wonka, " you can never be completely sure about anything you are not completely sure about".
I haven't been monitoring this thread because after reading the initial replies, I decided it was probably operator error. It only happened one time (my cruise control failing to set after turning it on) and has not happened since. More than once I have discovered that I have been driving with the transmission in "B" without realizing. I will shift to "B" to slow down, and forget to shift back to "D." It could have been that, or sun spots, or a hallucination, or an alternate reality. If it happens again I'll mention it to the dealer.
I did it often enough I documented my error on PriusChat. You are by no means the only one. Coming from 7 manual transmission cars in my past, it took a while before I would quit shifting at traffic lights.
