I just received a new lift hatch unit from Amazon which is black, unpainted plastic. I have a couple of questions: 1. Will I need to apply a primer before I spray paint it and put a clear finish on it? 2. The paint company I plan to order the spray paint and clear finish sells a 14 dollar mask to use while apply the spray paint. Is that necessary? Thabnkyou.
do you have a link for the item? Your car is 10 years old, I don't think your paint job has to be perfect....it'll still somewhat match

Nope, I already have what I need. Just need to know if I need primer or not to paint the plastic before applying the color and clear coat.
Primer would be suggested to increase adhesion. The mask, your call. Home Depot et al may have lower cost options. Paint fumes into the lungs suck. Have fun.
Primer helps to reduce paint sagging. If the paint sags, then wait until it is really dry, coat the sag with Bondo Glazing & Spot putty. Spread sparingly over the sag. Let dry. Block sand the area until all the spot putty is gone. The sag will be gone too
