How to Program a New Key Fob for Full SKS Functionality

I need some help too. I can't get past Procedure A. I get to the programming mode where the red security light on the dash just stays on. When I place the new fob in the slot it blinks 2 then 3, 2 then 3, 2 then 3 for about a minute. After the minute then the red light just blinks as usual maybe 1 every couple seconds. Fob is new from Ebay and the seller does have 100% positive feedback and good reviews for the other Fobs he sold. Thanks!

 

Okay, I'll answer my own post. 2 blinks then 3 blinks after getting into programming mode with the new key in the slot indicates that all 5 slots are used. I got me a mini vci cable and I could clear the other 4 slots. I could also program the key and the smart functions with the vci cable so I did not try the "chicken dance" again. The cable I bought was from ebay for about $17. It came with software but I had to find other software online to get it to work.

 

This happened with my new fob sourced from Amazon. I gave up and let go but pushed and held the lock button again and, sure enough, it worked with lock/unlock cycle happening many seconds later. Moral: don't give up so quickly.

I've got a question that might be a bit of a long stretch. I just bought a 2008 Prius with SKS functionality, however it only came with a single non SKS key. Is it possible to use these steps with the non SKS key to program a silver/chrome back SKS key with SKS functionality? If not then is there an alternate method that I could use or something that I could purchase that would cost less than going to the dealership?

You'll need a seed reset for the first SKS (silver logo) fob which can be either used or new. A second new fob will not require the reset, but a used one will. You can do all this yourself with a mini-vci ($20-$30), plus a seed lookup ($35?) service. So the minimum looks like $75 + $75 + $30 + $35 + $35 = $250 for 2 used fobs. The next best would be to find a local car locksmith who can handle a seed reset. And then there's the dealer... $700+ ?

 

Thanks for the quick reply. If I attempt the seed reset, is that going to disable the current working non SKS fob? I think I've seen mentioned that if you have AAA then they will program a key for you, but I'm not sure if they would be able to do a seed reset and program a new key from scratch?

Here is my plan if it works out. I'll purchase a new key fob ($110 on amazon). Have someone from AAA help me program the new fob with SKS functionality. Then hopefully My new fob works with full SKS and my old fob still works as a non SKS. After that I can buy another SKS fob down the line and complete the "chicken dance" on my own. Does that sound like it's in the realm of possibilty? If not, then which part can't be done? I'm assuming either an AAA affiliate can't do it or won't cover the charge and/or my old fob will be useless after we do a seed reset.

 

Aaa will be very expensive to do a reseed. But if you are a premier or plus member, they pay a portion of your lost key

 

You might ask AAA about your situation before assuming that they can handle it. Only a few car locksmiths are actually up to the task, so I'm suspicious.

There are two keyfob locking systems on a Gen2 Prius. The "plug in the dash" one uses a transponder chip inside the keyfob. Both SKS and non-SKS keyfobs use the same transponder type, so your current fob will continue to work as is.

A replacement fob has to be programmed twice - once for the transponder, and again for the SKS (buttons, proximity) functions.

The seed reset is going to be required to get any SKS functions working. That seed reset enables registration of a first keyfob, whether it is new or used. Once you have one SKS function keyfob working, you can add a new keyfob without another reset. Or you can do another reset and add a used keyfob as the first in the list (and then re-add the first one).

There is a maximum of 5 keyfobs that can be registered at once. The car came with two, and we don't know if any others were added. A mini-vci can display the current count. In any case, you probably would like to invalidate the old keyfobs that you didn't get with the car.

To answer your first question, anything anybody does with the SKS functions is not going to have any effect on the "plug in the dash" transponder function that already works. But you will need to separately register any additional keyfobs with the transponder function.

It looks like there are sever Pop-A-Lock venders in my area, so that's a good backup plan. I think that I'll purchase a new SKS fob and try the mini-vci route. If that fails then I'll fall back on the locksmith options.

I bought a new FOB for $105 through Amazon and Daytona Toyota, which surprisingly is not in Florida but in Las Vegas! Go figure. After reading all pages of this thread I printed out the concise instructions, watched the video and went about the programing. And I'm happy to say that it worked the first time for both procedure A and B. Many thanks to all and especially usnavystgc for the chicken dance!

 

I just had to buy a new key FOB from dealer, bought one on amazon i could never program

 

Just bought a 2005 with 33,000 miles on it. But, it only had one key. I bought a brand new SKS key off Ebay for $104 and programmed it on the first try! Thanks OP for posting the steps for us.

 

Great tutorial! Everything works fine at first attempt! I now have a spare remote FOB with SKS.

I have a 2006 European Prius. It's a 2 button FOB with SKS. The OEM part number over here in the Netherlands is: 89994-47070-84. I purchased it over here in the Netherlands at the Toyota stealership for € 170,92. They wanted to charge me an additional € 20,- for learning the new FOB. I kindly refused because I wanted to do it myself as by your instructions. They told me that many have tried but noone had suceeded yet. According to them it is only possible with a € 1.000 worth computer they connect with my car. Ah well...

 

I need help, I think my original key fob died(partially), maybe "usnavystgc" can help me

Prior to 2-3 months ago my fob(the only one supplied with the used vehicle) for my 2005 Prius worked perfectly all functions no problem.then it started to get weaker. It would automatically turn the interior lights on when I walked by it. I started to notice that I needed to walk closer to the car for that to happen then it stopped doing that. I would have to start putting the pocket that I had the fob in right up to the exterior button on the door to open it. Then I started to have to actually put the fob in the ignition slot to start the car, about a month ago none of the outside functions would work and the fob would only start the car not work the locks or any of the SKS functions.

I ordered a fob from the same "Daytona Toyota", with the silver logo on the back, that a few of the others on this thread have used. I was able to program the new fob with "Procedure A" to start the car(first time) but not to use the SKS functions.

Went through the "Chicken Dance" several times, checked, rechecked and replaced batteries pushed the key button(tried in and out). Checked cabin battery several time it always had good voltage. Reread instructions, reread posts and instructions tried again several times with same results no SKS function . In all the times I could never get past step 9b. Tried all the modified steps even tried several of my own. I finally had my son in law (who is an IT guy at a major company) come and help me several times, also no luck.

I began thinking that there was probably something wrong with the original fob and he agreed but didn't want to tell his father in law that I had been probably wasting my time.

Again, Yes I did do and follow everything in this thread multiple times, my question is........................................

So my original fob (that did work) stopped working except to start the car. Is there any way to get it to work again or am I S.O.L and I need to go to the dealer or a competent locksmith?

 

Change the battery on the original fob

 

Thanks, but I have changed the original fob battery several times and I always made sure it had 3+ volts usually 3.3 volts. I need more info if there is anything else that I can do other than what I already stated.

 

Did you turn off the sks button? Located under steering wheel, by your knees

 

No, but I have tried several times and in different combination of pushing the SKS button in and out while trying the fob. The thing that sticks out about the fob not working is it didn't stop suddenly. It was a gradual weakening that I had to get closer and closer to the car over a few weeks to get it work, until it finally quit working completely in the SKS function
