3 Weeks later with the New 2016 Prius. MPG

I traded in my 2006 Prius (110k miles - $175 in repairs) and my shiny new Prius 2 (with rebate) gets about 53 mpg so far. The old one was around 48. So the often quoted 10% improvement number seems about right.

 

I sold off my Mazda3, and went to a Prius. Went instantly from 27MPG to nearly 59MPG. I think my wife is sick of me screaming at the top of my lungs at the end of each trip proclaiming how many cents this trip cost us, versus the dollar or so it would've cost us on the Mazda. LOVE my Prius.

 

We haven't even got ours yet and my other half is already sick of me talking about it

Boy those old Toyotas and Hondas were PUG ugly but fun to work on.

 

Filled up last night from half a tank just for shits and giggles...and I calculated 68.8mpg.

 

Every BMW owner I've ever talked to, has all kinds of stories about mechanical problems. They pay all that big money for the name, but apparently there's not much quality to go with it.

6 months with my Prius. 5,000 miles. Got my first oil change. I average a constant 60 MPG, doesn't matter what drive mode I use. (I think the display computer is just stuck at 60.)

 

DonJuan may be the world's greatest lover; but he drives like a dork. Combined city/highway. New Prius III 2116, navigation and fancy stereo. Filled up tank at 610 miles, and only could fit 8.9 gallons into the tank. Something must be wrong!

 

My 2016 was bought 5/2016 in NJ. Averaged 62MPG thru spring summer and fall. But with winter temperatures here are often below freezing & the mpg dropped to only 49mpg. Culprit is the cabin heater forces the ICE to run more to maintain coolant temperatures. Am alos diaapointed in the front bumper will hit most any curb if you are tring to feel for a tire ht. Just raised the tire pressure from 34 PSI front and 32 rear to 41psi front and 38 rear. Has anyone noticed bad handling at these higher pressures? The tire is rated on the LEVEL 4 17" wheel at 51 max.

Am also disappointed in the front bottom of the bumper will hit most any curb with perpendicular parking if you are trying to feel for a tire tap. I just raised the tire pressures from 34 PSI front and 32 rear, to 41psi front and 38 rear. for beetr MPG and higher bumper clearance. Has anyone noticed seriously bad handling at these higher pressures? The 17: tire is rated on the Level 4 17" wheel at 51 psi max.
Haven't driven it yet tho. Any comments from other owners?

Amazing car tho. Nothing better at any price considering comfort, features, economy etc.

 

OP stated in last line they're 17" wheels.

 

Mendel wrote post 73. Post 74 states 17' wheels. I do not think Mendel can predict the future, even 2 minutes into the future.

 

I didn't have a lot of issues with my bmw 3 series. It was just getting expensive to maintain and my gas mileage was bad. While the Prime lacks the pep i really enjoy the ride. I'm surprised by the handling compared to earlier prius cars. It's that much better dare i say similar to european counterparts.

That's a very heady thought though...

We've got 215/45R17's on our third gen, and through winter use 195/65R15 snow tires. With the 15's I'll set them all just over 40 psi, with the 17's: 36 psi.

The lower profile 17's are harsher ride to begin with, get expotentially harsher as you raise them, so I try to keep the raise modest. Also, I see little or no diff in mpg. And I suspect running grossly higher pressures has got to take a toll on suspension and bearings.

Also, I set them all the same pressure. It doesn't seem to matter, makes tire rotation simpler.

 

I wonder why Toyota recommends higher pressure in the front tires.
