2010 Prius 12V Battery Replacement

I guess it's time for me to do a battery remove and install tutorial then... Lol

As for the HV battery, I'm not even afraid of that because once you pull the safety plug out, it's safe to work on the vehicle. Just make sure you disconnect the 12V battery as well lol.

 

What do you mean by "auto-up" on the windows? You mean the feature that lets you close the window all the way without holding the 'button' the whole time?

 

Yes, after replacing the 12v battery, the window control module might need to be reset. There's a procedure for that.

 

Yes, the "auto up" feature means you pull up on the switch all the way then let go. The window rolls all the way up.

The resetting procedure is really technical - you roll the window down a bit, then roll it up holding the switch in the "up" position for a few seconds after the window is up (I think it beeps when it's done). Really hard, right?

 

Maybe they should put that procedure on a decal in the corner of the driver's window.

 

I bought one of the Yellowtop batteries off of Amazon and did it myself. It was very easy. I ran jumper cables from another car to the connection point under the hood so I wouldn't lose any radio settings. I just made very sure not to touch the positive terminal on anything as I removed it. Piece of cake!

 

Question on the small 12 volt stater battery. I know on normal (non hybrid) cars, batteries last 3-5 years. How long do they last on the Prius. My 2010 with 55,000 miles. Just wondering if I need to replace it before winter,

Summers are harder on battery chemistry. I would consider next May a good choice.

(Winters are harder on starting, but in a Prius the 201 volt battery starts the engine, the 12 volt just starts the computers)

 

4-8 years. the key being, have you ever drained it, and had to jump or recharge. also, a lot of 2010's sat on the dealers lot and they let the batteries die. either way, you're at 6 years, and if you want to be proactive, go ahead and replace by late fall.

 

Sounds like a good time, considering the year and the miles. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it: maybe it'd be fine through the winter, but who knows. Four/five years is average battery "life".

 

Tks for the advise. I have never discharged it fully and have never jumped it. Not sure about the dealer. But it's been behaving so far. Also it's spoiled as I keep it in a heated garage....

I guess I should start looking for a deal and when I find it, just grab it and go.
