How many 2016 Prii have you seen on the road?

With the exception of the forward forked light assemblies, the front and styling has grown on me. I like it a lot. Very much looks like a shark to me, I'm not the whale shark variety life the Camry and the Yaris imitate.

Anyway back on topic, I am seeing more and more 2016s. I've seen three white ones a blue one, a gunmetal gray one, two red ones, and that's not counting all the ones I sighted a month ago when I visited San Diego.

Interestingly when we were moving silently through Whitby Abbey car park yesterday , my son said he heard some kids pointing & saying "there's a shark in the car park!"
Most people seem to like it, even the work petrol heads agree it looks great.

Hahaha! That's a good one! I knew there was something FISHY about that design....

I guess the only thing needed to complete that image, is to always play THAT (infamously spine tingling) theme tune from JAWS rather loudly, whenever a G4 is silently.....er....stalking it's way through a car park littered with pedestrians. The look of humour or horror on their faces at the sight of a seemingly predatory "land shark" silently sneaking up on them would be......hilarious!

Can't wait for some prankster to make a video of that on YouTube

Still just one red one in a store parking lot. A pkg 3 I think. None in view at the local dealer. You know it when you see it. Senior owner said it was her 7th back to 2001 (leased?). The white cup-holder thing makes it easier to see what's in them in the dark from inside and out (maybe not a good thing in some places).

Different wheels - or are they missing the hub-caps on the car on the left of the photo?

The one with the vinyl wrapped roof has the wheels without hubcaps.

    Fascinating!
    Please educate me:
How does a vehicle like the Prius (or indeed any other automobile) gain from having vortex generators installed? What are the genuine advantages or disadvantages?

I work in aerospace manufacturing. We have several aerodynamic specialists here - and the consensus was that adding vortex generators could possible help stabilize the Prius, but certainly would not hurt. I think they add visual impact.

    What are vortex-generators?
Vortex generators are small components deployed on surfaces. They modify the flow around this surfaces affecting boundary layer. Properly arranged, improve performance and controllability, particularly at low speeds.

Even the lowly Nissan Leaf has these on the underside of the car, much less the expensive Ferraris and such. They call them diffusers but they have the same basic purpose of the top side Vortex generators. You can be sure those expensive exotic cars wouldn't be using the technology if it didn't work.

I've been seeing the same 1 car here in Ottawa since last year. No wonder... it's uglier in person than in pictures.

It's gotten to the point that it is unusual when I don't see one or two Gen 4 Prius' everyday.
The red ones are very pretty - but I still prefer the Blizzard Pearl version.

Yup. They're there to improve stability by creating controlled vortices along the sides of the car to reduce turbulent flow (compared to uncontrolled vortices of various sizes at various times). The controlled vortices would also even out the pressure on each side of the car, reducing side-to-side motion.

I think someone also said they could help create a smaller boundary layer, allowing the air to flow closer to the car's surfaces.

Vortex generators are just one component of the aerodynamic features on the Prius. The others are:

    • "Aero corners" on the front & rear bumpers to smooth airflow around the front bumper and smooth airflow exiting the rear side of the car
    • Those aerodynamic wheel covers that everyone hates to smooth airflow going past the wheels
    • The slits at the back of the front wheel well to reduce back pressure to reduce air build up behind the front wheels
    • The spats ahead of the front and rear wheels to reduce turbulence near the wheels by sending the air around the width of the wheels (it looks counterintuitive as it looks like it's blocking airflow, increasing drag. I guess the reduction in turbulent flow more than offsets the additional drag)
    • The underbody panels with air channels to catch air and direct them between the rear wheels (bringing them out the centre of the car) instead of toward the wheels.
    • The two fins at the rear underbody of the car to create a more laminar flow of air exiting the rear of the car
    • The fins on the rear taillights. Not exactly sure what they do. I think it's the same as the rear bumper aero corner - to get the air to flow straight past the car and curl back further behind the car.
    • Of course, the rear spoiler

Edit: Added more detail to the list

This is absolutely mind boggling! Thank you.
I am at a complete loss as to explain why there are people out there who hate the Prius with a passion.

Do they know ANYTHING about this vehicle at all?

The amount of research that has gone into the aerodynamics of Prii designs is staggering. You'd think the average reviewer would cite these genuine facts, instead of some of the untruths or complete "bleeeep" they come up with.

Basically, it's an aero form on wheels! Excellent.

No wonder the Gen 4 is more flying saucer in shape than any other Prius
