I wish our Prii had a normal, full-sized key, to go along with the Fob/Smart Key/Remote. Why? Heck, I don't know! Back to my cave..... (I'm delirious from my 73 mpg this morning! )

 

I can't vouch for it working - but I read a story on PriusChat somewhere of someone who forgot to POWER-OFF when they parked at the airport for 2 weeks - and it was still running 2 weeks later - presumably not with cold air running all the time? I think they just said they locked it as normal by touching the door sensor and walked away with the "fob" in their pocket. Some other posts by people who "camped" in their Prius, but presumably they were inside with a "fob".

[EDIT] I also am not sure if it was Gen 1, 2, 3 or 4.

[yes, I'm not that keen on the word FOB, reminds me of "being cheated out of something", or of politician's antics.]

 

Looking at the radio spectrum, the P4 Key Fob's radio signal alternates between 312.1MHz and 314.35MHz.

When I owned a 2012 P2, parked at a hotel, this happened. At night when I approached my Prius, the key fob was in my pocket, the dome light came on. My 2016 P4 is too new to tell if the same feature is available. Did anyone have the same Gen 4 experience?

 

Yes, the interior light comes on briefly when I walk past the car in the carport to go for a walk at dusk.

 

Seems like it would be pretty easy for your dog to bump the gear lever into D while the car is running. All it would take is an errant tail wag, I'd hate to see your car on the news.

 

Only if the dog was also standing on the brake pedal.

I doubt a dog tail could cause both a left move followed by a down move, against the springs... you might have a better chance at winning the lotto.

 

If the fob is in battery save mode would I be able to lock the fob in the car using the manual key without the car unlocking by itself? Anyone do this? I'd like to not have to worry about getting the fob wet when I'm at the beach.

 

Sounds like it'd work to me. Why ask when you can test it yourself? Also, the key won't be in battery save mode if it's within range of the car.

 

I'll test it but would be nice to know if others have done it. I also don't want to walk away and then find it unlocks on its own later. I'll test it next time I'm washing my car and will be around for a while.

Good to know you have to be out of range to go into battery save mode. I just read that section in the manual today but it's a lot of info to remember.

 

It might need the battery isolated or removed altogether. But probably better than losing it in the sand on the beach?

 

My original idea was to take out the battery but I don't know how the fob would hold up to many repeated opening and closing. For occasional use that would seem like the safest bet, but it needs to be something I can do regularly. Haven't had to worry about it so far since the weather's been bad but I am due for a beach day.

 

'twould work fine for me - my "regular" beach days are at least 5 years apart.

I prefer to restrict my water usage to coffee and a shower/bath.

 

I've been putting my fob in a ziplock bag when I'm doing water sports. It can probably stand up to fresh water fine too, but salt water would probably kill it.

 

I tried this while washing my car this weekend. Approached car with fob on battery save mode. Door didn't open after multiple attempts. Used mechanical key to unlock, placed the fob on the dash, and crawled through the back to open the back hatch with a screwdriver. By the way that emergency latch is strange--I never felt what I was supposed to be moving with the screwdriver and the manual picture doesn't clearly show the inside mechanism, but the hatch eventually just opened.

I washed my car and at some point I noticed something (I forget what) that made me think the fob must have switched on. Sure enough I pressed the Power button and the car started. So putting the fob in battery save and then leaving it in the car by using the mechanical key doesn't seem to be a safe option.

 

Do any of these hacks work on a G3?
