How to set fuel price

Use right-side steering wheel arrow keys to get to setup menu (gear icon), down to "Meter Customize", then "Eco Savings", then "Gasoline Price".

Same thing happened to me... it was a very fast message.

Later I found this in the manual and I entered the price. But I still don't see it making calculations. Does it take some time before you'll see the $ amounts?

 

I believe you'll also need to add comparable mpg, e.g. from your last vehicle. I entered my overall of 39 mpg for my VW tdi and it has been providing savings in dollars since then. This setting is available from the same screen you set your gas price from and is labeled comp.. J

 

Oh, is that what the "COMP. Consumption" is for? I think I put the number of Gallons I filled in there... that could be my problem.

 

The first time I refueled I wasn't quick enough. Here is what I do now.

After refueling I get in and close the door. Put foot on break and press Start. Immediately put finger on right steering wheel select button (center of arrows) and watch MFD for popup message about entering fuel. As soon as message appears press the select (OK?) button. Enter the new price and press the back button.

You are now good to go. Only after this do I reset my Trip A counter and enter my refueling info into Fuel Buddy app on android.

 

In addition to the Price, does it also ask for the number of gallons? Such as I put in the "COMP. Consumption" area. Is that right?

 

No, it only asks for the price. The Comp setting is for entering the fuel consumption of another car (doesn't seem to make sense that you would want to change this number at every fill up) so that your current usage can be compared to that car. Seems pointless to me unless I'm trying to rub someones nose in how bad their car is compared to min. The fuel cost for distance traveled is much more interesting, and that is what entering the price will give you. (Info from p.128 of the owner's manual)

 

I disagree. Page 128 of the manual is poorly written. Everyone, re-read that page. I believe they are talking about "2 types of information related to fuel consumption". One is obviously price... the other is "Consumption". Two ways of looking at the data. What's the trip cost you? What's the gallons consumed for that trip.

If you were calculating your MPG's... wouldn't you need the number of gallons used? Of course you would.

The manual (Page 128) is poorly written. When that talks about "the vehicle" or that of "the comparison vehicle" - that's your car it's comparing to (previous trips). See the footnotes as well.

For the car to get closer to accurate information... it has to have gallons "consumption" info entered. Otherwise, (as the manual says) if nothing is entered for "Consumption" an estimate of the amount of fuel cost savings is displayed according to the trip meter.

I believe that makes more sense. Nowhere do I read that you're comparing it to a second vehicle. That page is just poorly written.

I can see your point but I can't agree the either of us is right until we get empirical data (by someone who knows how to set up a valid test, and that's not me )

 

I don't know, it seems pretty clear to me, you woudn't say "this vehicle" and "comparison vehicle" if you were talking about the same vehicle. Page 128 [emphasis added] says, "If information about the vehicle used to compare fuel consumption (“COMP. Consumption”) is entered, when the fuel consumption of this vehicle according to the mileage of the trip meter*2 is greater than that of the comparison vehicle, an estimation*3 of the amount of the fuel cost savings is displayed." Sounds to me like this is used to see your fuel savings over your past vehicle, perhaps the one you traded for the Prius. Might be important to some folks to confirm their roi on the deal. J

 

More data to support the comparison with another vehicle. I've read ALL of the manual and the only mention of setting anything after refueling is on p.95. That mention is only for fuel price, not quantity. If PriUncut is correct then I would expect a specific mention of entering quantity after refueling. Lack of such is proof of the opposite.

 

The car knows how.much fuel it consumed. It doesn't know how much you paid. The fuel cost computations work with nothing but the price set. I think my COMParison setting is zero or whatever the factory default is; I never set it. Third generation Prius did not have this setting and could compute trip/monthly costs.

The setting is to COMPare consumption with another vehicle. You're not saving anything by driving any vehicle, unless it's in the context of what you'd spend driving the same distance in something else.

Okay, BUT what about this sentence:

"*3: The displayed amount is only an estimate, and may differ from the actual amount." (underline emphasis add)

So tell me HOW can the Prius make ANY kind of estimate about another car? HOW can it have any idea of what I previously was driving? HOW can the Prius even know IF I ever calculated the milage on my previous car (or another one in the family)? Because I never kept track of milage until this car.

Furthermore, HOW can the Prius accurately know "how full" I filled the gas tank? Maybe I kept topping it off (after the pump clicked off). The likely hood is that IF no fuel consumption is entered... the amount displayed is only an estimate! Just like they stated.

I read it as... by entering the exact gallons, this makes the Saving indicator produce a more accurate calculation. That makes more sense to me. I wonder how we could definitively get the answer? I don't care if I'm wrong or right. But I think it would take a trip to Japan for the correct answer.

 

I have no idea if it can be used as you describe but the way it works for me is I simply entered the comp one time which was what my previous car averaged in mpg over its lifetime and it has been providing me with fuel savings reports ever since. Obviously. If you have no idea what your previous car's average mpg was then this won't work to provide that information. And yes the car does know when you fill up. No matter how much fuel you get and automatically starts the mpg tracking each time. Our 18 year old Lexus does this as well. J
