I've spotted presumably the same blue one twice, it was heading west on the A64 before hitting Malton. First time I saw it far enough ahead to flash it (didn't see a response!), the second I only had time to wave....still, don't think it saw me.

    Some people never notice things.

I had a SILVER FORD up to 3 weeks ago. I pulled up to my mother's place to take her to visit Dad in Aged Care. She walked up the driveway, got in the car, put the belt on, got her lipstick out as usual - didn't notice that she'd got into a totally different WHITE car. Didn't notice it silently drove down the street instead of a diesel rattle. 3 km later, I asked if she noticed anything different. Yes, you've put a white tray in the middle.

I broke the news that it was a NEW car.

I was getting gas at the Shell station.

Young guy on bike: "Is that the new PREE-US???"

Me: "Yep. Kind of different, huh?"

Him: "Yeah! What happen to it?!"

Me: "Takes awhile to get used to."

Him: "Yeah, I'm trying to find something to compliment... but I can't find anything."

    ----

I actually thought that was very funny! :ROFLMAO:

I pulled up in Bridlington day and heard 2 loud young kids approaching - expecting a smart remark, one actually said to the other "That's a nice car - its a Toyota hybrid!".

You know there's hope for the human race, when young children with minds largely untainted by the prejudices of many a maligned motoring adult point out a Gen 4 Prius Hybrid and shower it with the genuine accolades it deserves!

I find it worth mentioning that where I live, I arrive home these days to find the local kids who are on holidays, out on our secluded streets, kicking a ball about. As I approach and turn into my street, it is worth noting the look of awe on their faces, as I noiselessly (apart from that ubiquitous high pitched electronic whine) glide past in my iconic Prius II. You can hear them whispering among themselves that "it's an electric car".......and then standing there rubber necking as my Prius quietly backs into its parking spot before I disembark.

Furthermore, a lot of young people I know are genuinely interested in making their first vehicle a Hybrid or EV. They've become painfully aware of the fact that 80% of the cost of petrol in the UK is pure governmental tax. They're also becoming clued up that hybrids come in all sizes - from the little Yaris to the humongous Lexus SUV Hybrid.

There's hope yet, for the human race

ha ha! Yeah, it was a rough area, maybe shows me up for making stereotypical misjudgements...
I was a pure diesel fan before - but I see how the new DPF regen means diesels aren't suited for short journeys, so small hybrids are going to be better in urban areas.
I had a 1.1 3 cyl diesel supermini before this, it averaged 64.1 mpg (imp.) over 40,000 miles. My Prius is already at 65.1 mpg (imp.) at 6,000 miles.
The last big comfy diesel I had averaged just 46 mpg over the same routes - looks like the hybrid is becoming the better choice!

See, this is the what the pro-diesel, anti-Prius people love to quote. (Keep in mind I'm talking about a specific subset of people. There are pro-diesel people that are perfectly fine with hybrids and other alt-fuel vehicles). They'll always quote that you can buy a diesel in Europe that matches the Prius' mileage. Never mind that it's not available in North America, it's smaller (2 classes smaller) and has a tiny engine (most people laugh at the 1.0 litre I3 in the smart fortwo or the Fiesta).

Given that you've owned both, what are your thoughts (aside from the slightly better mpg in the Prius) of the Prius vs. your previous supermini. (was it the i10?)

I drove down to Charlotte NC to visit my daughter last week. When I missed her house and pulled into a parking lot to turn around, I saw my twin (except he didn't have a moon roof)! This was maybe the 4th Gen 4 Prius I've seen "in the wild" since I bought mine in March, about 6,000 miles ago. 20160719_181236_twinPrii.jpg

Yep - I went Diesel in 2008 with a Focus Diesel, great car, 52 imp MPG (44 US MPG), replaced in 2011 with Fiesta Diesel 61 imp MPG (51 US MPG). Wonderful cars, with lovely torquey engines. But hearing disasters ($$$) with DPFs, I decided Diesel had had it's day for me.

Logically, the only way to go was either Electric (EV) or Hybrid. And with the long distances and no charging infrastructure in Australia, EV wasn't an option, so Prius it is. Only had her 4 weeks, but overall average is 72 imp MPG (60 US MPG), and improving.

I saw a dark grey one pass me on the interstate this morning.

I've also noticed several Gen 3's either following, passing or slowing down to (presumably) get a longer look at my car.

I've owned diesel cars (two of them) and now a '16 Prius Four, so I'll chime in on this. The Four is replacing a '11 VW Sportwagen TDI, with a 2.0 turbodiesel. In a bit over 100 thousand miles I averaged about 47 MPG. I think diesels are really about the driving character of the engines which generate a lot of torque down low in the powerband. I rarely had to shift (manual tranny) over 2000 RPM but always had plenty of power on tap. Makes it very easy and fun to drive. In the US, diesel used to be more expensive than premium gas but I think that's changed. Since the Prius takes regular grade gas, you have to account for the difference if you're comparing mileage to mileage.

I've always thought people who buy diesels for MPG are kind of missing the point which is the low torque quality of the engines. I've never driven anything like the supermini, but I assume it has a fair amount of torque for it's size. The Prius on the other hand, MPG seems to be the main consideration. The character of the drive train couldn't be more different. Both seemed really smooth and refined though. Overall, the tech, design, and general refinement on the Toyota seems to outshine my outgoing diesel.

Thanks! Yeah I think that was part of the appeal to (or maybe even most of the appeal) - the mound of torque available at low revs. Granted some engines ran out of steam so early that you had to constantly shift but it seems your experience with the TDIs from VW is that those engines aren't the type. You would think then, that diesel fans would love electrics. It has similar characteristics with low down torque with even greater response (because it doesn't need to rev up).

Yes, sure was - my Focus 2.0 Diesel would drive very relaxed around town mainly in 6th, but drop it back a cog or 2 :) or 3 :D for a bit more fun. The initial response off the mark with Prius is similar, though I'm still getting used to the lack of steering feel.

Well the favourite is the VW Lupo. Never mind that it's 2 classes smaller and slower to 60mph. It's similar to the old "I can buy two Chevrolet Aveos for the price of one Prius" argument. (Aveos were the Daewoo cars rebranded as Chevrolets)

I think I posted a picture here on PC in the ev sub-forum of 2 model X's on the I-5 freeway s.bound that I spotted within just a couple miles of each other. That was the only unusual element, as obe quickly looses count of the model X&S sightings. Same with the Gen 4 Prius ib sourh OC. We're already thick with them here ... at least a couple an hour multi-level employee parking structure. Probably been 2 or 3 weeks ago that I lost count.

And today i spotted a banana yellow one with some writing on the side. I bet its a Cartridgesave car - the refill merchants often pick a standout car (beetle, mini etc) for advertising purposes. Or perhaps a Carlisle taxi - we were close to Cumbria....
As a counterpoint to the nice kids, as i neared a waterfall carpark some big bloke said out loud "thats an ugly car!".
As i got a few nice snaps of the Prius with mountains and viaducts in the background, i beg to differ!

I hit the Mother Lode. Saw 4 new ones around town in the past week. 3 white, and a silver one. Rarely see silver. And of course, all driven by young girls. :) (I'm the only OLD GUY Prius driver in these parts!)

I spotted the silver one in the early morning hours, at dawn. That silver is kind of hard to see.
