Should I purchase my 2012 PIP?

Go shopping. If you can find a cheaper one with lower mileage that'll help with the purchase decision. If you can't find a cheaper one or one with lower mileage, buy yours, then you won't have to worry about mileage. Put on as many as you like.

When looking at buying yours vs buying used I'd also give some value to knowing where your car has been and how it has been treated. With a used, you never do know. So don't just jump on the lowest price with lowest miles.

 

Looks like I'm not getting email updates... Thanks for the info and suggestion, Zhenya. She'll probably ask for the 6 month M to M extension. And no, she wouldn't look for a cheaper PIP. She'll either buy this one and partially finance it, or turn it in and buy a used Gen 3 Non-PHEV for a lot less. Trouble is, this one got rammed by a deer last Fall, and needs cosmetic bodywork if she turns it in.

One other question: I just got an extended warranty, cheap, to extend the Nissan warranty on my Leaf one more year along with my $159 a month lease. We consider this less important for a Prius, but are there any good deals on extended warranties out there? I'm talking $500 or less for a year. (I paid about $350 - less if I turn it in early, because I also got 0% monthly financing.)

 

Answer: Definitely not at that price. I am currently looking on Car Guru's at a listing for a 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in at $12,995 asking price with 12,240 miles. Vehicle has been in inventory at a local dealership(non Toyota) for 382 days and was originally on the market for $19,995. According to Car Guru, this vehicle is priced $3,844 below market and has a clean car fax. Still no takers at that price.

When I purchased my 2013 I remember looking at this listing, however because it was not an "advanced" model was not interested. If I were in the market for a Prius Plug-in this would probably be at the top of my list. Remember, $12,995 is what they are asking not what I would be offering. Color is the dark gray with gray interior.

 

Are you sure the model listed at $12,995 is not a salvage title? That is thousands below the lowest price I've ever seen, especially with only 12k miles. There's no way this would sit for a year at that price and mileage if the title was clean.

 

I agree. The low price on PiP's is around $15,500-$16 in this area. Still makes my buyout at closer to $18k a poor deal, but $13k with low miles seems suspicious. That's much lower than a regular Prius of that age and miles would go for.

 

Not sure if my first comment was posted so I'll repost it. I recently bought a 2014 plugin with 23,400 miles for $17,000 in Buffalo N.Y. that was a lease car in like new condition and a clean carfax report. A plugin 2yrs. older for $13,000 doesn't seem to be suspicious in comparison to my experience. What amazes me though is that a toyota with an msrp of $30,000 would depreciate so quickly considering how toyota are known to hold their value.

has nothing to do with toyota or the quality of the vehicle, and everything to do with the history of the car, it's pricing, sales discounts, gas prices and competition over the last 4 years.

 

Any ideas of replacement cost for the PIP battery? Could be a factor, even if a misconception.

 

i think 5-6k, but's it's not even a consideration. prius resale in general have poor resale right now due to gas, except in cali.
but consider this; at times, over the last 4 years, brand new base pips sold for as little as 24k after tax credits.
using 32.5k as the original price is misleading, and only a problem for those who actually paid it.

 

I do not believe I mis-read the link. A reputable car dealer from a major manufacturer does not sell salvage title vehicles. Too much of a liability. See for yourself what prices on the East Coast are going for:

I agree. Last Oct-Nov. I purchased my 2013 Prius Plug-In Advanced with 26,100 miles for $16,500 with clean car fax and still under factory warranty. For me it was too good of a deal to pass up. The MSRP originally was $39,000. Have enjoyed every mile.

I wonder what these vehicles are going for at auction?

 

I have no idea about the auction but I'd bet 2 to 3 grand less. You got even a better deal than I did mine is only a PIP base.
