One of the oxymorons of Microsoft Windows is that you use the Start button to shut it down. But wait -- my Prius demands the same oxymoric digital dalliance! Too similar for conincidence? Hummm......
Engine START/STOP is on the regular cars. Hybrids get a nice POWER button (well it's the same button, just different wording). Oh and the universal "power" symbol
What would you prefer that it be called, I'm wondering? "No Power"? But that wouldn't work either, would it? Possibly an LED message that changes so that ON displays when it's off and OFF displays when it's on, or vice versa? Regarding Microsoft (crap, I hate it when I end up defending them) hitting the power button on your computer will start the shut down process so you wouldn't feel odd about hitting the Start button to start the shut down.
On the Mac all you do is select Shut Down. Easy, intuitive, but if you are into stealing a interface you have to turn it on its ear. Kind of like the trash down and to the right. Lot of time went into the interface and a lot of time turning it on its head. You have seen the 666.exe that is run on clean install of a fresh Windows OS have you not. It flies by very quickly about 2/3 to 3/4 the way through the install. Check it out. Do a clean install on your HD of course you will loose all data and programs but it is a small price to find the truth. The truth is out there! I can lead you to the light give me your hand.
