Here's a picture of my rear brakes... just wondering if this notch is normal. The fronts don't have this but both rears look the same. It's almost as though the pads aren't grabbing the whole rotor.

what notch? do you mean the ridge on the top and bottom where it looks rusty? if so, normal.

The rusted area on the rotor. On the fronts the whole rotor is smooth, you can feel a physical difference on the spot on the rear.

    If it's normal that's fine that's why I'm asking.

yes, completely normal. how many miles on her? might be a good time to disassemble things, and lubricate the slide pins. don't forget, the rears are different because of the parking brake.

Just over 100k km so around 62k miles.

I bought it used and I think it's still on original pads so I was thinking of changing them anyhow.

    Thanks for the info.

keeping mind, most prius brake pads last well over 100k miles. so, measure them, before replacing, unless you prefer to replace pro actively.

I haven't noticed any decreased braking so I will probably wait. I use a lot of the return regen braking so hopefully they last a while.

the biggest issue with the rear brakes is road salt and corrosion of the moving parts. toyota recommends inspection, but you really need to pull them apart and lube, or at least test.
