The cars affected are Prius and Lexus models from 2008 to 2012.

Toyota and other carmakers have over the past years been rocked by millions of recalls over problems with airbags from Japanese supplier company Takata.

The latest recall does not involve Takata products and the problem has not been linked to any fatalities or injuries.

The recall includes some 495,000 cars sold in North America, 743,000 in Japan as well as vehicles in Europe, China and other regions.

Mine is a 2013 Prius which I assume is produced in late 2012 and not affected by this? How can I find out for sure?

When the recall is made, details are posted to a website. I think that the place to see all the information is Recalls.gov

yes, apparently in some vehicles the air pollution control mechanism for limiting evaporative emissions from the fuel tank has cracks, thereby sending more pollution into the air than designed.

For those of you who read the repair forum, you'll notice that in mid-May the local Toyota dealer, at the behest of corporate, wanted the airbags from my car and forty other punters for a "study", complete with a $100 gift card and a loaner for the trouble.

Airbags were replaced on 6/1/2016. That's a pretty short timeline for study reports, but what do I know. One of my more bloody-minded co-workers thinks that it might have been a preliminary dry run.

    Fun.

I went to the NHTSA site and found that my 2010 Prius II is subject to the airbag recall -- but Toyota and the government have apparently not agreed on what the solution is.

Toyota's website says my car is sort of being recalled. As above, there is a recall, but they don't seem to know what to do: "Remedy Not Available."

I have a friend who's Honda was recalled for the airbag. They don't have a remedy (or parts), so they gave him a rental car which he's been driving for months. I don't know if I want a rental car.I definitely don't want to leave my Toyota at a dealer for a few months.

I looked up my 2010 Prius and saw the same message. I hope Toyota can come up with a workable remedy. I don't want this to be like Volkswagon, where no one can figure out how to fix the problem and so VW will have to buy back a ton of cars.

Oh, the fix is simple. Replace the side curtain airbag modules. The cost is not so simple. I suspect Toyota is lobbying hard for a cheaper fix.

You know, it amazes me that such a simple device can be so poorly designed! Simple in construction, complex in design that is. I mean, come on, a weld that fails with no stress on it?! ;)

I think the second recall about the canister in fuel system should not concern USA & Canada custormers.
    Sources:
    English news report
    Japanese news report
Toyota Japan's recall announcement of the canister
    WHY?
Because the USA & Canada models have different designs/regulations than models outside North America region.
The pictures below are edited from Toyota's official documents.
    the different designs:

the Japanese description about the recalled canister (NOT concerns the USA & Canada models)

The picture below is the Japanese description about the remedy for side curtain air bags in Japan.
Source: Car Watch (from Toyota Japan in the first place)

If you do not understand Japanese, you may use Google Translate App for mobile to scan the picture.
In general, to apply a small "protector" patch.
BUT I don't know if they will use the same method for other regions outside Japan.

    Of course they are!

We (the consumers) put tremendous pressure on suppliers (like Toyota) to provide their product at the lowest possible cost.

We (as shareholders, via our savings and retirement funds, etc.) put pressure on the same companies to produce reasonable profits. (Although, of course, we can argue what is reasonable profit!)

So, of course, Toyota is trying to find a cost-effective way to address this problem.
