2005 Prius Making Noise

sounds like your brake accumulator is leaking.

 

No warning lights on the dash?

 

i would ignore it, if it's working okay.

 

My Prius makes that noise as soon as I open the driver's door, first thing in the morning.

After that, only sometimes, when braking. Once the vehicle has been running for a while, I no longer hear it. However, after I've parked, I'll hear the same noise after I've locked it and I'm walking away. Lots of noises in fact. Usually short ones, but not for very long.

If it's going on continuously non stop then it might be a problem, otherwise, my Prius has been doing this for three years - and no problems.

You need to get that checked, it should have dtc, you just need a code reader that can read prius codes

 

Thats the brake vacuum motor. if it comes on briefly and then shuts off that's normal. Since the Prius engine shuts off at every stop there's no way to get brake assist vacuum from a engine thats not running so there's a assist motor that produces it. You can force it on by just pushing on the brake pedal a few times.

You must have just bought the car as you will hear that sound alot. Almost every time you step on the brake. If vacuum is leaking from the ABS unit it will run that motor continuously and throw a Master Caution Red Triangle on the dash. Hope you never see that light as the ABS unit is very expensive. You'll know it too as the brakes will be bad too.

By the way what are you calling the "Hybrid Drive"?

 

The Prius is an otherwise very quiet car, especially when stopped in traffic. So quiet, every sound you hear will sound quite amplified several fold. Particularly if you have good hearing! The brake vacuum pump noise will sound even louder if you're standing parallel with other traffic at the lights, in congestion or in your garage with the front windows down.

Regarding how quiet this vehicle can be in stealth mode when stationary, I've lost count of the number of times I suddenly believed I had a major mechanical malfunction - only to realise it was the unfamiliar sound of the engine if some badly maintained engine of a car or truck to the side or the rear of me. Or even further behind. You brake and hear a horrible squealing noise......repeatedly, in congested traffic. It takes a while to realise it's someone else close by, and not you. Even a badly surfaced road can generate scary loud noises from your drivetrain.

So, unless you get a red triangle warning, you're more than likely perfectly okay. The noisy brake vacuum pump is one of the Prius II's idiosyncrasies. Reminds me of the landing gear being deployed on an aircraft. I wonder if the development engineers also did THAT on purpose?

I have a 2005 prius, and I know exactly what the problem is. The problem is to do with the circulation of the coolant. The part that is not properly circulating the coolant to both the car and the hybrid battery.

If you do not fix this soon it will cause your hybrid battery to fail because it does not cool down the hybrid battery properly and the engine. You might be out of warranty on this part but you should replace it. I forgot the code that it shows up as

This is a common problem. Get it fixed right away. It caused my hybrid battery to fail if you do not fix it right away

 

P1121 is not related to the battery at all. It's like you saying you didn't eat dinner and your car ran out of gas.....absolutely no relation

My 2005 makes the same noise now and then.

 

1. The brake actuator is covered under an extended warranty.

2. If for some reason your car is not covered, then buy a used unit on eBay.

 

The extended warranty probably needs specific codes to prove failure. Just like a weak battery wouldn't qualify for warranty until p0a80 is present
