I misspoke, there is no play button. I tested it today. When a text comes in a tone sounds and a message comes up on the Prius head unit screen.

There are two options/buttons on the screen, read and ignore. You can press the read button and the car will read the message to you.

Or you can press and hold the phone off hook button. A picture of a microphone comes up on the head unit screen. When the microphone turns green you can say "read text" and it will.

Also it will ask you if you want to reply to the text.

That's what happened but when I pushed the button "nothing happened". Trying to replicate this as I could not do it with two 5Ss in the car.

Same here, the voice asks me if I want to read or ignore, to which I can answer verbally, but I can't remember if it asks me if I want to reply. I need to check this now.
Edit: just checked, I can reply to texts using voice.

Once you press AND HOLD the phone off hook button on the steering wheel a picture of the microphone appears on the head unit screen. If that microphone doesn't turn green it will not accept commands.

If the microphone doesn't turn green that means your phone isn't properly linked.

    Thanks,

May be the icloud text alert I was getting. It is not alerting me for normal messaging received in my 5S.

Man this is complicated. Read the manual and could not see the message inbox screen on page 167 of the nav manual. Now I just downloaded the etune manual. Argh!

I can make and receive calls with no problem in the Prius Nav system. Just texting I am curious about.

What phone are you using? My Prius tells me that replying using voice is not supported by my iPhone6.

    It should work.
    Are you getting messages?
Do you have show notifications tab turned on in the blue tooth settings?

For some reason I cannot hear or reply to messages via the car - only the ignore button is active. But on the iPhone the solution is to hold down the phone button and then tell Siri "read new message". You can hear it and reply via voice.

You have to press and hold the phone pick button on the steering wheel. That activates Siri hands free. From there you can ask Siri to read the message.

I have the same problem. New 2017 prius two. Iphone 8. It keeps telling me my phone doesn't support that. But it will read me the text I receive.

I have sent a text using Siri on my iPhone 7 Plus, wish it would WhatsApp as well as I hardly ever get a text

I just pressed the normal voice control button for more than two seconds to get Siri

Cortana works pretty darn good with the cars radio head unit if I do say so myself. I love that fact that I can just tap the talk button on my steering wheel and tell the car to call Cortana. When she picks up, I just tell her what I want to do. So far using Cortana I have created / received / replied to texts & emails all verbally without ever touching the phone. I also use it to start the Pandora app on my phone. (May work with other apps as well, iono)

sidenote: my phone is a Microsoft 640XL running windows 10. not sure if that matters or not.

I applaud you for still using a WP. I gave up my Nokia 950 running Windows 8 when the camera started blacking requiring a reset. I really liked it too. If only Microsoft didn't abandon the platform, I might've replaced the Nokia with another one. It's hand free driving with Cortana still surpasses anything I've seen on iOS or Android. And best of all. It just worked. I didn't do any app for it besides hooking up Bluetooth. I can only hope they'll make Cortana an app for iOS or Android.

Your in luck then. Cortana is available on both iOS and Android. At least as far as I can tell it is - but I only ran a quick search and read the topic heading. Says it's available on both though...

When I 'm driving, all (that is 100%) of my attention is focused on my driving! Anything less than that is woefully insufficient! I am only just able to do this, and have had a few close calls, but so far I've managed to survive, and so I ask all of you to help me by focusing all your attention on driving too, so I don't have to compensate for your distraction! C'mon, you all know it makes sense!!!;) When my SmartPhone connects to my BlooToof headset, it automagically goes into "Driving Mode" so if anyone sends me a text I'll receive the text, but they will get a message "Sorry, but I'm driving now - I'll get back to you later, or if this is an emergency please call me on voice! Thanks!"

So what's the difference between talking hands free on the phone while driving vs replying to a text via Bluetooth (also hands free)? My hands are still on the wheel and my eyes are still looking forward. I never touch the phone at all.

That being said, to be honest, I'm not that big of a fan of the display on the headset. I've found myself watching that darn mpg display way too many times just trying to inch it up a tad bit more. I'd think it would be/is more of a distraction than my phone which I never touch or look at sitting on my floorboard or passenger seat.

No matter what your hands may or may not be doing, when you're driving, you need full attention of all your faculties, brain, hands, feet, eyes, ears, and when you try to multi-task, then something will invariably be compromised. It's just not worth the risk! …my gripe is not with my inability to multi-task (I know I can't), my gripe is with those idiots who think they can, but are woefully mistaken! ;)

I get to the point I can't handle a conversation while driving, then my hope is that my son / daughter-in-law take my license away. Because it's obvious I shouldn't be driving if my ability to function is that severely limited.

I remember being in a friend's car with my friend driving, and he was having an argument with his wife next to him in the passenger seat. The argument started as the occasional sniping, and degenerated into an all-out war, at one point the wife grabbed the wheel, at which point I asked him to stop and let me out! :(
