2010 prius oil consumption

I have a 2010 with 87,000 that I bought at 80,000. I changed at 85,000 and it hasn't used any so far.

 

We have a 2010, purchased new. Now with 80,000 miles. It burns no oil.

 

We also have a 2010 purchased new; 114K miles. It burns no oil either.

That said, 1 Qt in 5000 miles is not much of a concern.

 

Our 2010, purchased new, is so far not consuming any oil, at least not enough to be noticeable. It's at 61,000 km. Build date August 2009.

I'm using Toyota 0W20, and six month oil change interval, which is currently working out to be maybe 5,000 kms between changes. Very short, I know.

I agree with above, 1 quart per 5000 miles is "not bad", just be sure to monitor.

 

For that mileage, that is technically fine. The owner's manual statement allows far more even on a brand new car.

My 2014 Forester, with just 20k miles, is already burning that much. Technically, even that is legit. But so many others are burning so much more that I just received the class action settlement paperwork.

On this issue there is a very wide gulf between what car owners expect, and what car makers allow.

 

A quart of oil in 5K miles it seems to be a little in the high range. Do you have a history record of the vehicle from previous owner??????????

 

Yeah it may be ok with Toyota, what is it stated in the Owners Manual: a quart every 600 miles in a new vehicle? But I mean, that's got to be lawyer-driven. If I bought a new car and it consumed oil like that I'd be pissed, and if the company building the car trotted out that disclaimer, I'd be shopping another car make asap.

I really think they should be obligated to put that oil consumption statement on page one of their brochures.

It's funny, our Toyota Prius is the first car we've ever had with near zero consumption between oil changes. All our Hondas would go through somewhere between a cup and a pint. I figured that was the norm.

 

there's a thread or two here about 2010's burning oil. most seem to notice it around 100k, but not everyone is observant.
doesn't the 2010 get 10k oil service in the u.s.?

 

Regardless, I get mine changed at 5k intervals. Cheap insurance.

 

What car makes don't have a similar statement in the Owners Manual? Certainly no make I have ever owned.

 

Again, this Prius, our first Toyota, is also the first car we've ever had that so far consumes no oil. But with our Hondas, which invariably did consume some oil, I don't recall ever seeing an oil consumption disclaimer in the Owner's Manuals.

I just now scanned a 2015 Civic Owners Manual, for the word "oil", and didn't see anything about acceptable oil use. You can see the manuals here:

I have almost exclusively owned Hondas and Toyotas and never had one that used any oil. I think it is the exception rather than the rule if one does. I change mine every 5,000 miles, I don't know if it is such a good idea to wait 10,000. Not changing when needed can make them start using and I don't trust the companies to tell me when that should be. Of course there are rare exceptions when they start using for no apparent reason.

 

Mine has 60K on her and I check the oil level the morning of the oil change and have seen zero oil use. I do get the oil changed twice a year or < 4,500 miles and the dealer uses either Mobil 1 or Toyota OEM oil.

 

2010 bought new with 88k. No apparent oil consumption with 10k oci.

 

Once I was taking to my mechanic about "burn oil" issue. His take on Toyota's engines, they do burn oil compare to Hondas's ones. If he sees this problem with Corollas, than it should be with Prius as well. Till 100K it's not common, and engine with Prius doesn't work as with Corolla, so probably the issue is deferred. My car is 2013 and 70K, so far so good.

 

Ditto at 98k.

 

So I guess getting closer 100K on Prius it is worthy to check oil's level once for a while. May be every 2K.

 

I just had my 2010 Prius 120K tune up. I was using oil but no oil on the ground. The mechanic said it needed a PVC hose and valve. $916.45 later, it still is using oil after 1,000 miles. Anybody knows why?

 

How much should a 120K tune up cost?
