Okay I did that repair a year ago I also have over 150,000 miles on my 2005 prius... still cheaper then a new battery and a new car... it will get the car back up and running nice quick fix highly unlikely the rest of the battery is gonna melt... the car all ready showed you which two cells were the weakest ... replace them... battery should be just fine after that.

Thanks. If Toyota corporate doesn't kick in any goodwill warranty I will definitely check out local independent options. The last time I had an issue it was with a part which had a service bulletin out on it where Toyota was providing free replacement parts for something or other and I was just outside the expiration of that deal and they paid for about half of the cost of the part as I recall - however it was in the form of dealer credit, so I think its pretty clear that if Toyota kicks in even $1500 (I hope its at least that) then I'll still have to have the car repaired at the dealership. That would still leave me with $2200 out of pocket but that would be doable. I do want to get a new battery pack because I don't want the car to become someone else's problem when I sell it. I simply wouldn't do that to somebody. I've had two Toyotas and I helped my aging mother years ago buy a new Avalon so there have been 3 Toyotas in the family and sometimes that alone will generate a loyalty discount according to what I'm told. I should know by Tuesday and I will let everyone know on this board what corporate has offered if anything.

It does not always get the car up and running. Do a search through these forums and you will see examples of it not fixing much.
And as you'll also read on this forum, even it does get it up and running it isn't always very reliable.
I'm glad to hear it worked for you, though.

Well Gen2 had some generic issues: (1) no filter on batt cooling fan which could plug (depending on use profile - dogs in back etc), and (2) if you ran out of gaso, it let you run the HV battery down, which shortens batt life. Unfort we have very little data from Toyota on what % of Gen2's have new batts, and so far Gen3 seems quite good.

Good news! Toyota is covering the entire cost of the repair. Huge relief!

Thank you everyone for all the insight you provided. This incident DOES have me pining for a new Prius assuming I can sell this one locally. The new hybrid battery (I would think) would be a good deal for someone looking for a 2007 4 model with very low miles. Debating whether to drive this one a year and wait or take the plunge. Or just wait until the end of the model year hoping for better incentives (although the incentives are great right now). Thanks again. Can't wait to get my baby back!

If it's all about cost of ownership for you, then the smart money is on keeping this car with the new battery. Especially if the condition is as good as you described it, and maintenance history is as you described.
