All new cars develope problems but I see very few complaints on this forum. Just what can I expect in a new Prius...............................
I can tell you that I have an '05 prius that I bought back in August of last year and I currently have just over 20,000 miles. I haven't seen the dealer or a repair shop since my purchase. I've had nothing to complain about! Based upon my experience, you have no fears to look forward to I'm happy to say. I just change the oil, add gasoline, now and then and that's it. I have an 80 mile round trip commute a day, all highway. I have gotten 49 to 51 mpg in good weather and 43 to 45 mpg in bad weather. There are a few things I'd like to change on the car. The driver's seat isn't the most comfortable in the world, the sound quality on the bluetooth unit is poor and not adjustable and there is significant tire noise depending upon pavement. Would I buy again if I had it to do over? No doubt about it.
I've had virtually no problems. I pushed the power button too fast and got it to lock up. After the first week I learned not to ever do that again. Was easy to reboot in any case. I also had the brake warning lights once. These went away after re-boot, and it never happened again. I have 18000 miles on the car now about, and less problems than with any other car I ever bought.
9 months, 13000 miles and no problems. The seats are really easier to clean than I first realized and the VSC is odd when it engages on potholes but I love this car. Oil changes and tire rotation, can't be simpler.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(B Rad @ May 23 2006, 02:24 PM) </div> I only have 6500 miles on my Silver #7 but I can tell you what to expect in a new Prius fairly well: 1. This is my third Toyota product in 4 years ('02 LS430, "04 Sienna XLE AWD) and this car is proving as bulletproof as the other two. No mechanical issues to date. If it follows in the footsteps of the other two it should reinforce my decision to leave the German carmakers the same way I left the American carmakers before them. 2. My credit card monthly statements are a 30% thinner than prior to owning the Prius reflecting the 300% increase in my milage over the LS430 3. My danger to myself and others is down slightly as my average travel speed has come down from the lower 70's to upper 60's mph to the lower to mid 60's mph 4. Here is the bad - you are going to be labelled a "greeny", a "tree-hugger", "a liberal democrat" --- these are the generalizations that go along with driving the Prius. I am none of the above (have not met a tree I would not like to cut down to burn in my fireplace, or a left wing liberal democrat I would vote for yet for President). This generalization may be a benefit to you depending upon where you live and of course your idiologies. 5. Another bad here - there is some Prius envy on the road. Some other vehicle operators do not appreciate you cruising down the road smiling as you pass gas station after gas station. A word of advice - when filling up at the gas station make sure not to gloat or smirk... stay cool and calm and collected. It is unwise to draw attention to yourself at this time when others are dropping $60 + to fill up thier V8 AWD Excursions. Gain the internal satisfaction of filling up your tank (fuel bladder) in about 3 minutes and getting change back on your $20 6. Expect unbelievable technology - get Bluetooth - just love it. Love the DVD/Nav system. Love the backup camera. The car is a technological powerhouse inside and under the hood. And it all works and it won't be bringing you back to the dealership to fix it like the BMW iDrive and won't be as difficult to use or understand like the MB Command system (iDrive may be the WORST driver-user-interface to date). 7. Lastly, expect to see a ton more Prius's and other Toyota hybrids on the road as time moves forward. Toyota expects to sell over 1,000,000 hybrids annually by 2010 and to offer each of its vehicles as a hybrid by 2012. 8.. One more lastly, expect to have fun. This car is fun to drive for many reasons. I find myself smiling all the time.
B Rad: I got my Prius at the end of 2004. It is my commute car so I only put 11K on it so far. Other than the recall (software flush), I have had ZERO problem with it. This is my first Toyota. I have had several Hondas/Acuras (2 Accords, 1 Odyssey, 1 Integra). None of my Honda/Acura gave me any problem within 7 years. My Integra was the extreme one. Within 7 years of ownership, not even a light bulb went out! I expect the same reliability from Toyota even though the Prius is such a sophisticated vehicle.
I got mine about 13 months ago and have about 17K. I haven't had any problems with it, but I still intend to get the extended warranty. There have been some Prius lemons, but they seem to be rare.

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(B Rad @ May 23 2006, 01:24 PM) </div> No problems yet. Six months, 10,000mi.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(hilore @ May 23 2006, 03:19 PM) </div> 1 yr and 25k miles, no problems. But did occasionally see problems on the forum like the one quoted. I remember there's another case of transaxel problem, a case of hybrid battery problem, and one case of hybrid ECU problem. All fix under warranty of course.
Mine is 13 months old and 18K miles with no problems. My wife's just had the inverter replaced after 4 months and 4K miles.
14.5 months, 14.5k miles, all we've done outside of regular maintenance is a rear alignment shim job.
Problems? After 23k miles, not a single problem or issue. Our Prius gets its oil changes and tire rotations as per our Toyota maintenance schedule. By the way, after 13 months, our average gas bill has bee $77.00 a month. Our mileage remains a consistent 52.3 mpg. Other than having to wait 11.5 months for our Prius to arrive, we've loved every moment. In fact, my wife said over the weekend that our Prius is her all-time favorite car! Ditto!
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE(dbermanmd @ May 23 2006, 02:02 PM) </div> Guess I better by a Prius as I love being labelled a liberal. And thanks to you and everyone for all the great replys so far. I am just about sold, unless of course I over do this reserch thing and just keep my old German / made in Mexico Volkswagon.
Yeah, being labeled a greenie liberal in my Prius makes me feel good. We are the change we want to see in the world. Mine: 2004, 42,000 miles, 46 MPG lifetime, software and brake switch recalls done, touchscreen replaced, headliner re-glued...and the usual oil/filter changes and tire rotations. Hers: 2005, 16,000 miles, I'll guess and say the same MPG (don't keep track, she won't let me!), seatbelt trim piece replaced, that's it. Routine oil/filter changes and tire rotations. These cars rock. Cheers, Curt.
