Well, the Yaris Hsd is not a PriusC, is a Yaris with the PriusC powertrain. The European Yaris is built in France so Toyota Europe saved some money not having to import the PriusC from Japan.

Except for the grill, the two look identical, and the size differences are slight; so I don't see Toyota bothering with a Prius c/Aqua in Europe.

Yes but it's almost the same size (Prius c is slightly bigger than the Yaris). With the Yaris, Auris and Prius, you're covered for the first 3 vehicle sizes for hybridisation.

Also, a Yaris Hybrid also means lower taxes (like you said, don't need to import it from Japan) so the savings are passed on to the consumer and allows Toyota to market a more affordable hybrid. That's why the Prius costs quite a bit more than the Auris Hybrid. (Ok there's a size difference too)
