BMW Exec: BEVS And FCEVs Will Co-Exist In The Future - PHEVs Will Disappear

    Thoughts on this?

I think plug-in hybrids are an excellent interim solution to get people used to driving electric, without having to worry about range anxiety due to the gas engine backup.

Once they can get a reasonably sized and priced version onto trucks and SUV's, then I'd imagine EV adoption rates would skyrocket. Especially if in the truck, it can double as an onsite generator, which would likely prove popular with contractors who won't have to lug around a generator any longer.

Rubbish. There will be a broad mix of ICE, HV, PHEV, BEV and FCV. Also in the mean time some sort of FCV plug-in can also coexhist...

It's the infrastructure stupid. I think in japan with long distance by train and plane, that maybe bevs take over. Maybe the government buys the hydrogen stations and fcv are there.

In a big countries like US and china hydrogen infrature is extremely expensive. These are the number 2 and number 1 vehicle market respectively. With gas/methanol/ethanol flex fuel why not phevs as the solution along with regular ice cars and bevs? I don't think fcv have a chance. The government would need to tax high to get them situated, and without domestic manufacturers of fcv I think its a poor choice for any government.

Europe? It is a sick car market with only the german car manufacturers (vw group, bwm group, mercedes) making any money. I can't imagine anyone making money on fcv there if there is not a real market in US or china.

BMW? most of their eggs are in the phev basket (i8, i3-rex, 330e) with addional effort on bev, and fcv not until around 2020. The corporation is betting on phev. They look like they are doing fcv just in case it takes off. Jung is the guy in charge of fcv. Of course he needs to make a case, but it is not the way that the corporation appears to be investing. Follow the money ;-)

As long as plug-ins have enough range to allow overnight recharging, what's the downside? I have to believe that most people can live on 200 miles/day.

My favorite quote that rhymes with joke:

Fortunately, current gas stations can be switched over to hydrogen stations.

Eventually those advocating fool cells will realize the cost of gas station conversions.

How far in the future was he talking?
In time, we could see a fuel that could be a replacement to the ICE for not much more in price, that also uses whatever fuel we are using for the ICE. Since hybrid vehicles are an ICE mated to some other propulsion source, the PHEV will be gone. That doesn't mean there will be no PFCEV to take its place.

Also if you want to talk PHEV or gaso Hybrids with a plug, probably nobody beats a Toyota Hybrid variant, if only Toyota wanted to go that way.

A Toyota RAV4 PHEV with 20 something mile range would seem like a no brainer to me to produce, it's the gas-guzzling SUVs and Trucks that need the vastly more efficient EV range the most for everyday driving.

    According to this - there's not much new going on with bmw's hydrogen, over the MORE than past half decade;

    BMW 1 Series Fuel Cell Hybrid (2010) | H2-Mobility | netinform

Hey Merten ... thanks for the pearl of wisdom. Be sure to get back to me once you have something on the road that costs less or equal to your i3 or less than your than your overpriced 3 series gas burner. OH, and are you going to be burning coal to reform hydrogen, like Japan? Talk about a step back from the diesel.

Unfortunately, Toyota and Lexus said you don't have 4 hours to waste, so buy what they make now.

Well toyota and their partner, ahem have proved that in the US it is probably more expensive to add a hydrogen pump to an existing gas staion than to build a green field one with proper capacity. Of course if their are only thousands of cars its cheaper to convert gas stations. Get it, if fcv never make it to hundreds of thosands you can convert gas stations. its a losing proposition.

What did keynes say? In the long run we are all dead. Its a bad investment that doesn't pay back for hundreds of years. Who knows what will be done then (I'm guessing hyper loop!! and self driving helicopters).

We know tesla, gm, nissan, and ford are ahead of toyota with plugs today. I'm sure toyota can pull to number 2 if they just change their strategy.

So from her point of view, problem solved. Cars not needed any more.

Well hybrids were supposed to be the stepping stone into electrification and they've done that. The PHEVs appear to be that half step closer to BEVs.

We'll see how quickly Toyota can pump one out if the Outlander PHEV turns out to be supremely popular in the U.S.

If the asian & EU markets are even 1/2 an indicator, Mitsu won't hardly be able to keep up with production. Its worldwide popularity is the very reason it's taken so long to make US deliveries - can't make batteries fast enough to deliver here.
