    Hello,

I have a 2006 with about 7800 miles. There is a noise that I can't seem to identify that seems more pronounced over the last few days.

It's coming from behind my dash, right on the other side of my speedometer. It sounds like a pump of some sort is activating. It can happen every couple of minutes and it lasts around 5 seconds. It seems to be more common at slower speeds, but this could be just due to less road noise.

The only way I can describe it is it sounds like a whirling or winding noise of some sort.

    Thank you

the brake pump, hydraulic pressure pump, is on the RH side of the car in a line from the driver seat to the right of the speedo cluster. To find out if it is what is causing the noise stop the car and put it in Park and then step on the brake pedal hard 4 times, is that the noise?

if it's running that often you need to have it checked out. the system is losing pressure way too quickly if it's running every couple minutes. unless you're talking about heavy stop and go traffic with lots and lots of braking.

Mine has always seemed to run alot. (2005). Almost every time I come to a stop I hear it, and i do mostly city driving with frequent lights. I actually wouldn't worry much unless it seems to interfere with driving or performance.

It's okay if it's running fairly frequently when you're *using*
the brakes, but not when you're not. Try sitting in one place for
a while, in Park. If the accumulator keeps leaking down and causing
the pump to run with no brake usage, then have it checked out.
    .
The increase in noise over time may simply be the pump "wearing in".
New accumulator pumps seem to be a bit quieter than ones that have
been on the road for a while, but this doesn't mean the seasoned ones
    are shot yet.

Yup, I'm with Hobbit and others. If you're hearing it that frequently I'd beconcerned about the accumulator running too often. There was a report on PriusOnline a year or so ago where someone had that problem.
