oh, i'm so confused.

how many bars left on your gas gauge, when you tried to fill? a few people have experienced problems in their gasoline vapor recovery system which needed part replacements.

 

I see this fairly often on forums that have these types of FOB's: butt dialed.

My CMax has much larger buttons and they are easier to hit. If my pants are too tight, I sometimes lock/unlock the car while getting in/out due to my pocket fabric stretching/pushing on the FOB. I even read of one instance of a pet getting locked in the car by itself because the FOB was in the center armrest/cupholder section between the seats and they stepped on it while the owner was outside the car.

 

As long as you stick with the "Top Tier" Retailers, you should be okay. Shell and Chevron are Top Tier.

EDIT: It is not true that the gas always come from a particular "brand" refinery.

Also, boycotting a particular brand does not always work due to the fact that any brand of gas including top tier like Shell, Chevron, Mobil, etc. can be found at no name (non branded) stations at various times.

i've never had any problem with exxon mobil, but i don't think that has anything to do with the pumps.

backfill sensor is a new one on me, but makes sense since others have complained about this.

 

I've had a problem with them ever since their drunk tanker captain polluted Alaska. I don't use them. Or BP. Ever.

I used several brands gasoline brands, while using each brand I get better miles on Costco, Valero and Chevron gasoline. In some threads I read that for specific individual Chevron gasoline provided better miles on his several cars(Prius Gen 3 included). Costco seems to be the lower price from Valero and Chevron (at least where I live, could/will be different other cities).

If you look at the pump nozzle, there's a small hole on the side, maybe a half inch or an inch from the end. There's some fancy (but simple) mechanical bits that stop the pump when that hole gets covered - typically, by the gasoline as it fills past that point. In the case where it's stopping prematurely, the shape and length of the nozzle combined with the shape of and position within the neck of the gas tank are probably causing fuel to splash backwards occasionally, hitting the hole. One way to fix it is to go somewhere else (because their nozzles are probably shaped slightly differently), another is by shifting the nozzle somewhat. You can angle it in one direction or another, or rotate it a little, or push it in further, or whatever. Just don't spill any gas!

Random side note; a friend of mine is a fan of classic Volvos, and lives in Oregon, where it's illegal to pump your own gas - except if you have something of a specialty car, apparently. ([citation needed]; my friend says he has the rules printed out to show the gas station attendants, although I can't find any such rule online except for motorcycles.) Anyway, it's (allegedly) because some classic or unique cars have trouble holding the nozzle in place or keeping it from shutting off frequently. Last time I visited, the attendant promised he knew what he was doing...
...and spilled gasoline all over my friend and his car. So much for that "attendants can pump gas safer" argument.

 

All the gas brand aside, it's likely just a wonky pump.
