so i just got a 2007 prius with 117k miles. Very clean looks runs great, just have an issue with the headlights. One is completely out and the other flickers on and off. My questions is, is it just the bulbs or both ballast? I had an autoshop quote me and its a crazy 1k to replace both of them. Is it hard to replace the ballast? Can someone point me in the right direction to order a ballast from? Also as far as the bulbs go theyre the d4r bulbs right? will these work for them? (philips standard hid 42406 D4R Bulb) Any input would be amazing thanks so much!
First step is to replace the bulbs, then replace the ballast if necessary. The D4R bulbs are very expensive. On Amazon, the Philips are $55 each. I bought a different brand that was half the price with a lot of good reviews. I hope to get them installed this evening.
Pretty easy to DIY fix, especially if you've small hands! (…look on youtube (Luscious Garage)) - but stay clear of cheapo Chinese knock-off lamps, stay with top brands! (see other threads here on PriusChat) - hope this helps - Wil BTW Welcome to PriusChat!
Sure, stick with the reputable brands, Philips, Sylvania (check out the many threads here about HID, life-span thereof etc. etc) - avoid the cheapo "no-names" (usually made in China - sorry, anyone from China, but it's a fact, that although they may be on their way to World Domination, their QA/QC leaves a lot to be desired!
In the past dealers were charging ~$700 to replace the HID bulbs, but I heard there was a Toyota class action lawsuit about this so not sure what the case is now. I tried to do them myself back then but ended up having a mechanic do it in about 15 minutes. Philips D4R 42406C1.
