The Chevy Spark was the first new car to offer an audio system without a CD player. Toyota is now going that route but it's not making it particularly obvious on the website or brochure. You have to read carefully. For now, here's a list 2016 RAV4 SE w/ Entune Audio Plus w/ Connected Nav or Entune Premium JBL Audio w/ Integrated Nav RAV4 XLE w/ Entune Audio Plus w/ Connected Nav or Entune Premium Audio w/ Integrated Nav RAV4 Limited w/ Entune Premium Audio w/ Integrated Nav or Entune Premium JBL Audio w/ Integrated Nav All RAV4 Hybrid models 2017 (speculation) Prius Prime w/ Entune Premium JBL Audio & 11.6" HD Touchscreen (Look at the photos, there's no CD slot)
The CD slot has its uses. I am working on a visor for the main display and plan on using the CD slot for attaching it.
The Tesla Model S also has no CD player. Not sure about the Model X, but I doubt it has it. FWIW, I don't think I used the CD player once on my former leased Leaf (leased for 2 years). I haven't used it my current used Leaf either, but I guess I should make sure it works before the warranty runs out.
We used it a lot in our 2005 before we installed the iPod kit. I've used it a handful of times in the 2010 but it has a skipping issue that I didn't bother to get resolved because it wasn't worth the hassle.
That's a good point. On my 4 year old Volt I've never once used the CD player for a CD, but it's done a great job holding a phone mount. If there's no CD player smart car manufacturers should have some sort of built in slot for other stuff.
